Road testing a new Diesel Heater

We have spent the last month touring southern downs of Queensland including Kingaroy, Toowoomba,  Millmerran, and Warwick region road testing our new diesel heater. As you may or may not know, but Warwick is close to Stanthorpe,( 90 klms) and Stanthorpe, is regularly the coldest town in Queensland.

Currently the unit on as I type and it is 20+ in the van. No diesel or exhaust smell and virtually no noise except to a very very very low audible tick from the fuel pump. This investment now allows us to enjoy our travels to the outback regions of Australia and to head south during the winter months, albeit against the traffic flow to the north.

Yes !!! the initial setup does cost $$$$, but in our humble opinion well worth the outlay.

It is a rather easy do it yourself installation. If I can in stall it then anybody can.

We regret not getting to Texas this trip but !!! next time.

Well worth the investment & can be done for half the cost the dealers want, not that hard to do.

We would agree a great investment, coming from the old country didnt think we would need one, ye sure!!
Just be mindful that the van is a confined space so keep a hatch or window open to prevent any possibility of carbon monoxide build up.
I have just purchase a CO alarm and at the same time a LPG alarm, mandatory in some countries or at least highly recommended as a must fit in others.

How do they work, from this page there is a Youtube video on the operation of the hearter under the heading "How does an air heater work?"

I had mine commercially fitted before the price of the AirTop was reduced. It was about $1400.00. Running cost - I reckon on half a cup of diesel an hour.

HI All
We got a price to have a diesel heater installed. It was $3200. Sort of blows the budget and seems pretty excessive. I see above that one was fitted for $1400. Is my quote a ripoff?

I am getting a Planer, and will install it myself. "Is Russian, is good. I'm sure these have heated a Siberian bottom or two!" biggrin

Aussie Paul. smile

There is NO chance of Carbon monoxide as its a heatsink . The burn fuel / air goes outside..
Pays to have gas alarm in any case.. Van should have one?

Diesel and Gas heaters heat up your van from the floor - up (hot air rises naturally) .. Reverse cycle aircons heat from the roof and need to push down to keep your space warm ..

Certainly you can run your aircon at a CP but you could find the "noise" a little annoying as they also tend to be louder than the others .. (I've had both diesel and gas)

and if you intend to free-camp, be aware that not all IBIS r/c aircons can necessarily be powered by a 2 hp Gennie .. (that's another topic found elsewhere on this site)

JIM, and other happy diesel heaters owners/ would be owners.

The heater is very silent with only a very light ticking noise. However we installed our diesel pump in the front boot and of course you guessed it, our bed head butts up against the back of the boot. I will cushion the noise now we are back home.

Anyway. google " how to install a diesel heater in RV."

Also I had the fortunate opportunity to visit 2 other forumites in my area to gain a better understand of how to install..

You will save about $700 ??? by a DIY installation.

We purchased from    dieselheat.com.au   Graeme Yost 0418130971 he is in Tasmania, but that is ok, still Australia. Ha  Ha

We have no vested interest in this company other than we are a happy customer and G.Y service was second to non. Nothing to much trouble for G.Y to sort out for you. Our cost was $1150 delivered.

Everything was included, Set out all the parts and spend some time reading the manual and instructions.

Now all we want is someone to invent a diesel cooler A/C, so we do not have to put up with the noise of the roof top A/C.

Leave it to the Chinaman. He will eventually succeed.

Give me a PM if you wish.

All the best

Jay&Dee

Hi Paul. Glad to hear you are going with a Planer. I've just had one installed, against the so called experts advice. It is working great and noise is not an issue. I have the manual and remote start up and can also fit a sim card to the controller and start it via SMS. Good luck with yours.

Graham.
