I have a Factory or Dealer fitted Stereo / DVD / CD / Navigation Device etc. The Maps seem to be about 4 years old just from our recent travels , been to the Manufacturers site and their is no free downloads , they want $150 to upgrade to 2015 maps . Should I bare this cost or should the dealer .
I guess from the fact you have posted this, you expect the dealer to pay for the upgrade.
My question would be how long have you had the car, and was it a run out special, at a reduced price?
You could ask the question of the dealer, but I would not be surprised if they say not interested, especially if you negotiated hard on price originally and you have had the car for some period of time.

Hi Ian,
Had it 5mths now , it was a New demo Motorhome that they used at all the shows , fully loaded with every option /upgrade , nothing to add . I am taking it back for some warranty issues and was wondering whether this would or should be covered by warranty. I will ask but just wanted to know whether I had a leg to stand on . Personally I think we will stick to our Tom Tom because it has Camps 7 loaded in it , and I think the Clarion will be ongoing Map upgrades at a cost.
Thanks
mick
before you go back to the Dealer, why not phone your State customer protection agency.......they should be able to give you advice
If the vehicle was sold to you as NEW as opposed to ex-demo or used (have a look on your sales contract, most GPS devices have a lifetime free map download (usually 2 year - about the same lifetime as a sparrow) or a specified warranty and free maps are within that.
However Clarion (which used to be a good brand) is no longer in that status and you will probably find that they don't provide any free map up-grades.
If the Dealer wont pay the $150, then ask them to give you a $150 credit - either to buy something you need from them or whatever (that way with the profit they allow - it will probably only cost them $50 but you still get something out of them)
Even if you got the RV at a sharp price, they still made a profit and would have depreciated the vehicle over the time they had it as a demo - they didn't loose money when they sold it to you!!

If the state of currency of the maps wasn't in the contract I'd say you're screwed... but, I think you're on the right track with sticking to your Tom Tom for navigation Mick. I think the combo units are horrible to use, besides not being a dedicated nav unit, they're too far out of your driving line of sight. Your Tom Tom can be positioned for much safer, and easier use.
Cheers, Steve.

I doubt it would be covered by warranty. The unit would but not the maps themselves.
As it is going back to them for some work, it would certainly be worth asking if they would upgrade the maps as a customer service for you at the same time. I would especially do this if you are able to prove the age of the version on your unit, and you have been getting your servicing done there. Short of that I don't think you would have a case to take action under consumer protection laws, as the unit operates as it should, albeit with dated information. In the end it comes down to the relationship you wish to keep with the dealer, especially during the period of warranty.
I also agree that using the Tom Tom with the additional Camps information on it would probably suit your needs better, and the unit in the motorhome can just be a back up for you. All the best.

dogbox - the consumer laws would most definitely apply to new vehicles. It is a breach of the Trade Practices Act for the Dealer (the contract is with the seller, not the manufacturer, and the buyer) to refuse to upgrade software irrespective of what the device is !!
As an ex-retailer - I know the above Act back to front

It's got to the stage now on vehicles that come with in dash GPS, that you need to ask that the Dealer give a written statement that the maps are current and up to date. Unfortunately the Dealer is in the same boat as you, to a degree, in that the "map" is in the vehicle when he receives it for pre delivery service. The map was probably loaded by the manufacturer wherever the vehicle was assembled. Lot of people have been caught.
I'm interested how you put camp 7 on a Tom Tom, I've got the Tom Tom appreciate any tips.

Thanks guy's , the vehicle was sold as new and the Clarion was put in by the Motorhome dealer not by Iveco . I will ask but won't be to upset if they say no , as Steve said the Combo units are a pain to use , however I do feel the Manufacturers of these units should offer one free upgrade when purchased new.
