we would love to go to Birdsville for the music festival in July. Can anyone tell us what we would need to go there and what the track is like. We have a camper trailer and a new Holden colarado. Besides water and fuel, anything else. New to outback camping.
G'day Rainy,
The child-bride and I have been regular travellers through Birdsville for 20 years. If the weather is fine there is a lot of great gravel roads and off-road tracks. Up until 3 years ago we exclusively used a Camper Trailer. Although I have always been a bit of a bush-basher I enticed the child-bride (formerly Chardeney set) to the red country by teaching her off-road driving and travelling with annual (Police Safaris) 3 week forays in a tag along style. Check web sites for Forensic Services Police Bush Safari - Lightning Ridge Police Bush Safari. You can contact me off-line (PM) if you require more details.
Travelling from Birdsville to Innaminka going through the NE corner of South Australia lies the stupendous gibber and red sand dune desert of Sturt's Stony Desert. The Cordillo Downs Rd does require slow and steady driving take two days and camp beside the creek bed at Providence Creek. Fine weather is essential as the road surface quickly turns to impassable mud after even light rains.
This trip is not for the solo traveller and total self sufficiency is a must.
