Bruce first thing get out from under mature gum trees - they are not called "Widowmakers" for nothing - they don't give any warnings whatsoever before they drop seemingly healthy branch weighing half a tonne or more.

Been their in Febuary while Lambie was in hospital. Ugly as. Tried a few of Possums but, found only repo cut and polish did the job with plenty of flaneltte old bed sheet. plus 3 - 4 hours hard labour. For all the flat surfaces. The roof and bonnet were the worst. White GX 200 Cruiser.

At the time 25 /2/2015 -28/2/15 it was raining here in Sydney too. Interesting that.

P.S. I would move ASPS. What about your van. Add more hours.

It possibly is not sap which will stick to the paint like dried chewing gum but probably caterpillar poop which can come from any tree or shrub when parked under them. The stain from the poop will be from the tannin in the poop....once dew/rain gets on the poop it leaks tannin - usually it will come off if you use some detergent. Apparently some droppings from insects in general can leave stains that cannot be removed due to the chemicals therein. Can also be from rain leaching tannin from the bark on the tree.

.. as weird as it may seem, I've found Eucalyptus oil most beneficial in the past to remove stubborn gum stains.

It can take time as it needs to mix/soften into the gum .. and I would suggest try it only on one spot first to see any effects ..

Not sure how it behaves on an older duco/paintwork though ..

Hi denis,

The tannin you speak of reminds me. That's what mine looked like. It was redish brown and looked like large dried flat water spots. Not gum sap.

yeah - the stains are not raised like youd expect with pure sap. It looks more like a dirty water dribble mark (mid coffee colour - that's flat white, not expresso lol) on the bonnet. Its so wet here, we haven't had the chance to have a good look over the rest of the vehicle. Oh - and its not a deliberate mark by somebody.

No doubt same marks on roof of 'van - but cant see that.

Fortunately, although the gum trees are large, they don't have large overhanging branches - they are more upright and there is a lot of wind shelter when the wind does come through - so not too exposed. For those of you who know it, its the Akoonah Civic Centre near Berwick in VIC. $126 a week and when its not raining - everyone in this 18 site park is around the fire drinking red or brown cordial.

Jules - if you read this - have you gained any further info about the sites and your particular need?
