Traffic rules in SA. Warning.

driving along the Eyre Highway yesterday I was pulled over by the police. My crime was not speeding but not slowing to 25kph while said gentleman had a car pulled over in the  other side of the road as I passed. He was lovely, doing community service yesterday warning interstate drivers of the rules. The fine is $1200, and 6mth suspension of licence.

i remember this being posted earlier, but another timely reminder for those travelling in S A.

Wow - you were lucky. I also posted this but a reminder is always good. Only time it doesnt apply is if there is a median strip and you are on the other side from the police/ambulance or who ever has the lights flashing.

There is another which will get you!, driving past schools, a 25km speed limit applies when children are present. This meant that if a child was walking, playing anywhere near a school zone and at any time of the day or night 365 days a year you have to slow down. It applies whether it is school holidays or not.
That is the way we interpreted it when it came in.
Of course if the road is busy and this may upset traffic flow etc. the signs are then not put up, drive past at a 100k.

The reason for this rule is to protect emergency service personal, it's darn scary when you are attending to a situation on the side of the road and some clown drives past doing 100+ k, its not impossible to see us working there, as there are these annoying things call Red & Blue flashing lights everywhere to let you know we are there.

It's a pity all states don't follow SA's lead on this safety issue.

Two things to worry about next time we go to SA. Many (many!) years ago a friend of mine was booked in Adelaide for speeding past a school during the school holidays. He was told that there could have been some kids playing there even during holidays.

I can see that South Australian drivers could easily cause problems when they go interstate - slowing down when other drivers are not expecting it. Peak hour in Sydney springs to mind.

Here in Canberra there is another school zone trap for interstate drivers - the reduced speed limit is in force ALL DAY, not just for a couple of hours in the morning and the afternoon. When we cross the border we automatically slow down to 40km/h at midday, much to the annoyance of following drivers. Also, during school holidays here the speed signs at schools are closed up so that the speed limits do not apply - contrary to SA's laws.

Hi Guys

I must be a little thick, but when you were pulled over it was because the Police had pulled some one over on the OTHER side of the rd in the opposite direction that you were travelling.

I can understand if it was on my side but on the opposite side is a little confusing especially when you take into considerations of all the twists and turns of the average rd, it would be very easy to go around a corner and pass the the local copper saying hi to a traveller.

just to add to this, at what stage does this come into force. If the road was dual lane the Police would be some 15+ meters away but on a narrow rd they literally could be 5 to 10 meters.

But as I will be travelling through SA next year, it is very nice to know this and thanks for the heads up.

Peter - youre so right.

The laws that each State Govt impose (to keep the thousands of public servants and the their political masters in a job) is just STUPID and DUMB

This applies to road rules. Its long overdue that one law applied to all States and Territories and get rid of the c*** and revenue raising.

If our small cousin, NZ, can do it, surely we can (although our pollies wouldn't like loosing the power and glory.

I think it's a good policy providing they have their lights operating so they're visible.

How many times does a police pull-over result in an accident.

Thanks for the heads up Sharon.

Traffic rules vary from state to state, if people are incapable of adapting to a few minor variations perhaps it would be safer for all concerned if they remained within the borders of their home state.smile

Here's a list of SA traffic rules and penalties http://www.mylicence.sa.gov.au/road-rules/offences-and-penalties

This rule applies to wherever you see emergency lights flashing regardless of the direction you are travelling. The young policeman was delivering a community service as I felt I was when I posted Santa.
I consider myself a safe driver, however as road rules change constantly regardless of state name, I had missed this one. Well forgotten about it actually, as Vida had posted earlier. I was only doing 90 max as I passed as I tend to slow anyway when I see emergency lights, not knowing exactly what the emergency may be up front.
I am pleased to know that you are the purveyor of all road rules Santa and perhaps you might like to enlighten each time a new road rule is implemented. That way we can ALL travel safely outside our state borders.

Thanks for posting the advice and I agree we are one nation its way past time we had one set of road rules for all states it may cost the states some revenue but more importantly it will save lives.

Morning Fran,

The feedback I gave was positive, take the time to learn the road rules of your destination state, adhere to them, and you positively will not get finedwink

Arm chair nomads eh! in the past two years my wife and I have covered over 60,000 km in our MH, visiting WA, QLD, NSW, and the NT, add to that the km we do in our personal vehicles and it comes to a respectable total, surprisingly we've managed it without incurring any traffic fines, guess we're just lucky.biggrin

It's a bit pointless taking the time to learn the road rules of your destination when the rules re passing a copper booking a motorist is not mentioned in the link on rules/fines etc for S.A.
Maybe it's not true?

Doesn't apply in WA, only on school days and between certain hours.  Does not apply during school holidays, public holidays etc.

You are correct and I apologise for not reading the rules correctly.
