Annie,

Most vanners would welcome a tail wind, generally saves heaps of fuel. If You are not comfortable driving in a windy condition, enjoy Winton for another day or two.

If you're retired you've got all the time in world. There's no urgency to be anywhere in particular. Sit back & enjoy until the wind goes down. That's our attitude. We don't like towing our van in windy conditions.

Listen to the wise one. Thats why he is the Know All, and anyway this time he really is right. I mean that voice in your head that you wouldn't normally pay attention to. Big winds and Caravans don't make compatible travelling companions

awful here at Camooweal too - tomorrow will be better but Saturday will be light winds - use the net to check wind strength for the next week

Thanks everyone. It seems to be abating a little, so maybe it might be better tomorrow. Another day here won't hurt, it's a nice little town.

If you haven't already may I suggest you go for a drive to the Bladensburg National Park - just south of Winton.

It is a good drive into a historic old station with the buildings still standing - http://www.nprsr.qld.gov.au/parks/bladensburg/

There is also the Age of Dinosaurs - just east of Winton back along the Landsborough Hwy. http://australianageofdinosaurs.com/aa-visit-us.php

I have visited both places and enjoyed both. The Bladensburg National Park probably wins for me because it is free and also because it is more historical Straya

There was this warning about tail winds caution and overheating on another website, quote;

And for those who have not had the unhappy experience of cooking a perfectly good motor it is worth noting that long spells with the prevailing wind behind a RV, pulling heavy, can fry the works.

Be sure your cooling systems are 150 per cent. If your fans cant suck enough air through the radiator because you are running too long and too hot downwind in what amounts to a vacuum, the motor will suffer.

Please stop and take some time out at regular intervals. After all this is a holiday we are discussing. unquote.

The fan will suck enough air through the radiator even with a tailwind. If you had a 30kph tail wind and were travelling at 80kph thats a 50kph of wind through the radiator, the fan wouldn't even be working. Unless maybe the wind speed is greater than your vehicle speed which would be highly unlikely.

I think you would be more likely to see a rise in engine temp if you were towing into the wind as the motor is working harder and burning more fuel.
