Raditator Cap Issue Tritons

Anyone with a Triton Ute take note of the radiator cap and temp gauge   they seem to have developed a  pressure failure issue.  Mate just cooked his and they are changing the engine under warranty thank Christ,  $18000.00 for this and they changed the auto transmission and diff  when it was only a month old another $14000.00.  Purchase price new was only $32000.00 and he still has three years warranty to run ,  Bet the dealer is happy to see him come through the door ,I think NOT

PS  They recently changed the manifold when the dealer test drove it and it wouldn't pull his 14 ft van up hill, "B: Doubles  were going around it up hill, seem he got the Friday Arvo lemon as others aren't having the same troubles and  are extremely happy  .

There's been a Mitsubishi re-call for the models that are at risk.....I received a letter recently to take my Triton GLX-R to the nearest Mitsubishi dealer, and they replaced with new radiator cap and also changed/upgraded the fluid composition.....mentioned there had been pressure failure issues.....a week after they completed the work I looked at the radiator overflow tank and it was empty and I removed the cap and could see no fluid!...straight back to them and they said they had "created" a bubble in my system when changing the fluid...changed again and now all O.K.....

The only other problem I've had...I was out in the donga East of Kalgoorlie and my steering felt like I had flat tyre..then wouldn't steer at all.....saw a trail of steering fluid behind me in the red dust...I had lost all my steering fluid when one of the two pipes underneath had become unscrewed...<obviously not done up tight when manufactured>...lucky for me one of my prospecting mates was a maintenance supervisor at a major mine in W.A.'s north...his 4WD vehicle had a most comprehensive tool box/tools....he drove into Kalgoorlie got the new steering fluid, came back, dropped the bottom covers tightened the pipe, and refilled correctly with no bubbles......how lucky was I that he was behind me?.... only cost me a dozen cold stubbies from my vehicle fridge....no other problems to date and I quite like this Triton..Hoo Roo

Mate looked at the triton forum and there appears to be a heap of owners reporting unexplained excessive black smoke followed shortly after with a cooked engine.

Mine was recalled for the radiator cap, etc. All fixed with no drama's.

I'm still very happy with the Triton and would buy another one in a heartbeat.

Vehicle recalls happen to all makes and models, and not only "cars". This is certainly nothing unusual

It bothers me when a "one bad apple in the barrel" scenario tries to dump sh#t on all vehicles of that type/make/etc.

I'm sure there are numerous people out there who (like me) are more than happy with the product.

A point Wombat 280 raises but fails to acknowledge is that a particular vehicle had some serious problems, but the Mitsubishi dealer has honored their commitment and replace the "faulty" parts. My opinion from the information presented is that the engine and drive train have possibly been beaten to death. You don't kill an engine, gearbox, and a diff from sedate blacktop driving (in any vehicle).

I would be much more concerned if Wombat had talked about problems with the dealer, poor customer service, etc. In fact I think the dealer deserves a big pat on the back. Credit where it is due. Kudos to the Mitsi' dealer.

No your wrong, this vehicle is has never left the blacktop and I couldn't think of a more sedate driver. Yes the dealer has gone to the end of the earth to fix the vehicle and is fed up with it as well, the work sheets on this particular one reads like a horror story from about 7 days after purchase, the only thing that hasn't been changed is the paint work. Yes all cars have recalls some minor in nature some with potentially explosive consequences Jeep and Colorado have clocked up 14 each to date all listed in the govt recall listings so there are problems out there in the car industry as to make that level of listing is a serious event.

I see from your reply Kendo you have a Mitsi and that's no problem to me and I sincerely hope you have many K's of trouble free usage but detracting and down playing the actual problem others are experiencing when the intention of the writer was to bring to the attention of others that if they see excessive black smoke or a sudden temp rise don't brush it off go to your service agent and get it looked at ASAP.

Please !!!! don't be so sensitive life is far too short , if you don't won't to be informed about what others are experiencing or if you feel the facts may cause you some distress then don't open the thread. Now let that be the end of it and block future postings from me..

Hi Wombat,

In response -

I see from your reply Kendo you have a Mitsi and that's no problem to me and I sincerely hope you have many K's of trouble free usage ...<Thanks, I do too > but detracting and down playing the actual problem others are experiencing when the intention of the writer was to bring to the attention of others that if they see excessive black smoke or a sudden temp rise don't brush it off go to your service agent and get it looked at ASAP...< I agree, but this sage bit of advice should be for all vehicles, not just Tritons>

Please !!!! don't be so sensitive life is far too short , if you don't won't to be informed about what others are experiencing or if you feel the facts may cause you some distress then don't open the thread. ...<Nope sensitivity had nothing to do with it mate. A thread appears about Triton's and I'm interested to maybe learn something that I may not know about my vehicle, which is a what these forums are great for. What I read is possibly true story about some poor bugger who has a lemon, now this can happen with any type of vehicle and just about everybody would know of a similar story with many manufacturers at fault. I do admit though I did object too the inference that every Triton on the road is now an unreliable dog and should be avoided at all costs.> Now let that be the end of it and block future postings from me.. <I'm a little puzzled by this statement Wombat? Are you so afraid of someone who may not agree with your opinions, or are you trying to infer that you have tried to approach me in a fair and conciliatory manner and I have blocked your messages, which of course you haven't, and I certainly have not.>

Oh and just in case you need to know a little of my background. I worked for Mitsubishi in their engine plant in Adelaide for 31 years and many of them in QA, so I do know a little about engines and drive trains. Yes from time to time as with all manufacturers a common problem will cause a recall. But for 3 entirely different major components to fail says to me that "someone" has beaten that vehicle to death.

Have a nice day mate.
