I have a 700w portable generator and am wondering if it is possible to operate a 600w microwave oven with this unit. Bought the generator purely to charge batteries and to run small accessories, but have since become aware that there are low powered microwave ovens available?

I do not think a 700W genny will run a 600W mwave.

The 600W will most likely be the output

The input will be much higher and is usually given on a label somewhere on the device.

I would expect to see an input of around 5 amps or about 1200W plus a bit more to start it.

Frank is on the money there Allen. Your 600w microwave, even if it's a new one will need at least 1000w input, plus an extra couple hundred watts every time the microwave transducer fires up. You need a 2kva genny to run a microwave without struggling.

Allen. Anything that grabs power in "bursts" causes gennies grief - womans hair dryers, electric tools like drills, microwaves and so on.....

Yea we had to buy a new microwave oven recently as the old just blew up. Big time. The one we bought is a 700 watt oven but consumes 1120 watts on the 240 side. Our 2 kW gen copes easily.
