Do NEW vans in NSW require an inspection every year for rego? Or are they now in line, as for new cars. I still have to, for my current camper as it has Hydrulic over ride brakes as does the boat trailer. Total pain in the arse. I do all of my own servicing with out fail.
Annual checks on vehicles makes sure that they at least get an annual service. If you go to a regular service centre in NSW and they know the vehicle they just do a quick check for the inspection. If you are not a regular then the inspection is a good work over.

The annual inspection is also a chance for unscrupulous mechanics to make a quick quid - in Qld you only need one when transferring registration and when you go to a mechanic for a RWC/Safety Certificate they have you over a barrel because if you don't get the 'fault' fixed in 2 weeks you can be fined as the vehicle is then officially deemed unroadworthy - the inspection form is forwarded to Qld Transport where they can cancel your registration and it's your word against theirs.
I agree with you on shonkie mechanics. we had a guy do a annual inspection of my tamdem boat trailer. He jacked up the the trailer under the second axcel, inverting the leaf spring in the process. To check for wheel play of the bearings.
I told him at the time what I throught of this action and the outcome it would cause, and that he should jack it on the frame only.
Back then we were towing the boat down to Tumby Bay SA via the Barrier Hwy. 65 km west of Cobar NSW that same spring broke the main leaf on the rear axcel.
Only for my Mechanical knowledge, I was able to hitch up the remainer of the spring to the frame using my jacks to lift it high enough to hog tie it to the frame and do the widest U turnaround and tow the lot back to Cobar at 20kmph with hazard lights on.(some Motorist blew their horns at me while towing on the shoulder ) at the time.
The best part was it fell apart in the main street of Cobar at 5pm.We rang the local Nrma service guy at the time, who came over from the other servo who said he couldn't help as we had dragged it off into the truck stop.
Word soon got out on the trucking radio about out delema, and the treatment from the other guy. He soon came back.And the locals One who orginised everyone else was the local Glazier who came to our aid and got opened the auto barn to get us a spring ( not quite the correct one ) and all helped change it over. We offered to pay him for all of his time and help.
The only thing he wanted, was for us to stop on our way back and drop off one only hole Snapper (frozen) 4kg( that we were telling him about) to put in his Webber BBQ. We kepted our word. and from time to time we still see one another.
