An open letter to the WEBMASTER

Hi Cindy, I was most interested the other day to  notice a new thread, I cant remember (and now can't check) the exact title but it was a poll to see if people wanted Billeeeee to return. I cast my vote which was yes, but that's Irrelevant. Others cast theirs, some had never heard of him and others said no. That's all fine, my issue is that the poll has deleted without reference.

More that that this action has caused the poll originator Yeoeleven to rethink his contributions to this great forum. Surely he is entitled to ask a question and get a response. The question was not inflamatory and was not intended to cause issue. I know that when Billeeee was posting he did at times sail close to the wind, he did cause people to think, but to my knowledge he was never defamatory and his comments never intended to be personal. He did after all decide to leave of his own accord, for his own reasons.

Personally, I , and I believe along with others miss his ireverrant  and fun input.

Yeoeleven, is one of the real gentlemen on the forum, i am pleased to call him a friend, I believe that his knowledge, insight and contributions will be a substantial loss to this great forum.

i would also like to know the final results of the poll he started.

i ask that you do all in your power to encourage him to remain.

thank you.

I don't think I am the only one with this concern I am willing to publicly state my thoughts and opinions, and stand for a friend. To many people hide behind secrecy.

although of interest the result of the poll is secondary.

Yep, one of my posts was removed because it mentioned people's income. Cindy did PM me after the post was deleted and I was at pains explaining that the source had been verified and the information was made public. I was simply relaying an article.

Yep, I have been deleted on another site just for asking why do we have to give in to the PC brigade so easily, guess it is all part of openness and honesty being just a step to far....

This is a privately owned forum.
The owner is entitled to do just as the owner wishes. It is not a democracy.
Anyone can start a forum and run it as they wish.

Cheers,

I was against letting Billeeeeeeeeeeeee back as in my opinion, he was a disruptive influence If he was allowed back, I would have gone. Bill

Hi Bill, thanks for your openness and honesty, I disagree, but that's not the issue.

john (Yeoeleven) should be allowed to ask the question, you should be allowed to have your say. I should be allowed to see the result.

if the thread got out of hand or personal then the webmaster should close it as she often does, we would all be able to see why.

My issue is that a valued member of the forum rightly or wrongly feels like he needs to withdraw from the forum.

I feel he should be encouraged to stay and share his enthusiasm and wealth of knowledge.

Bill again thanks for the input,

Life might be all about choices...death gives no choice...our late member Gary Kelly would dearly love to return I'm certain........Why do we do this to ourselves?....particularly when we can all see this will turn nasty.

An open letter to the Webmaster..I trust she will seal the envelope as soon as she sees it...
I know you mean well Poppy/S/E in posing the question and no doubt most of the usually silent majority agree with you.....Yeoeleven is a gem/ornament to this Forum and we are lucky to share his life/doings at his considerable age....he's an inspiration to all of us who hope to still be travelling and doing our thing in our 70's/80s/90's....as long as we are able..

Why would we wish to lose any of our members?...welcome back Billleeeeee, and Bill don't leave...., everyone contributes in 'their own way'....I'm proud however I have no ego....I reckon inflated ego's are one of the most destructive elements of a person's character and is guaranteed to ruin any harmonious team spirit in any Forum...

Let's just get on with what lives we all have left....play as a team and don't play the man/woman......that's all I've got to say on this...Hoo Roo

A thread sure to end in tears. The webmistress is not the enemy. She has total responsibility for keeping the forum as a nice place to visit. She seems to be doing a pretty good job of keeping the forum that way. Removing threads that allow a small few to be nasty is part of her method, it seems. Some threads are started with the best intentions but bad behaviour from a few stuffs it for all. Rather than writing open letters to the webmistress, better to support her in her efforts to maintain the feel of the forum and let the undesirables find their own way off.

People come and go on forums for all sorts of reasons. That's life.

If Billeeeeeee wants to come back, no problem. Same with Yeoeleven.

The forum will continue anyway. More will drop off and new people will join. Just the way it is.

Cindy (Webmaster) is away on personal business at the moment, she does a great job, and will see this posts on it's merits and moderate accordingly, when she returns.

Of course we would all miss Yeoeleven, as we would miss you Bill12 - and like some miss others who have left for various reasons. But accusing people of things is not going to help keep this thread open when Cindy gets back.

Well said Brickies - and Sandsmere - what you say is right - there is always change.

I put up the poll because Billeeeeee was considering rejoining the forum and I thought it would give him an idea of how the membership would feel about his re-entry. It wasn't an effort to cause trouble on the forum that I have contributed to for over 4 years. As it happens Billeeeeeee has now applied for membership and as Jules posted, Cindy has been away from the forum and will decide when she returns.

As far as my future on the forum I am not impressed by the deletion but do not intend to remove myself. As it happens i had decided to reduce my weekly updates to monthly when camping in one spot for a long time, it is time consuming and often difficult to find interesting things to report on. When I update the blog I will post on the Solo Forum and anyone interested can follow my progress.

Thank you for the encouraging comments, my life over the past 4 years has been an open book for those who were interested to read my posts on the Solo Forum and things will not change other than the frequency of the posts. Going on the road at 74 was the best thing and now am looking forward more of the best years of my life.

John

Hi everybody,
I deleted the original poll as this forum is not a place to discuss the merits or otherwise of certain individuals. This forum (especially the 'General' section) should be primarily about grey nomad issues such as where to go, what to take, good/bad experiences and advice about the lifestyle.  As I always do when I remove a post, I PM’d the original poster to explain why I had taken the course of action that I did.  As many of you are aware, two or three months ago, there were lots of negative posts regarding various personalities, their avatars, their contributions and how the forum had lost its value with or without them.  I will state quite clearly that I have no intention of allowing the forum to be used for those sorts of discussions again. Over the years, this forum been a place where many of you have been able to find friendship, get and give advice, and have a bit of fun.  I have always tried to give posters a bit of leeway and would like to think I have earned the reputation of trying to be fair and reasonable.  I am keenly aware that many of you are very invested in the forum but, ultimately, I have to try to steer a course for what I think is best for it.  I hope that you will all continue to enjoy the forum for what it is.  And, along those lines, I am now shutting this thread down. As always, I would be more than happy to receive any PMS on this issue (or any other).
