Presently at Cobram on the Murray. Considering taking the Omeo/Great Alpine Highways down to Princes Highway. Would appreciate any advice from GNs familiar with these highways in relation to road conditions and possibility of encountering snow during May...

Ken, I travelled it quite a few moons back but only by car and still would only do by car IMO.
Some very tight hairpins and steap all the way up worse in some places than others. For memory it's black all the way unless of course there has been snow then white up the top. Check on all that first mate.
Nothing worse than a mad gorilla stuck in snow
I did it the other way around and got to Omeo to prop the night and it was suggested I get over the other side pronto as snow was coming in that night, sure did. Good advice given that day. Nice drive though.

My avatar is Lightening Creek on the Omeo hwy at Easter . We came from Oxley free camp near Wangarratta, then up to Tallangatta, a beautiful town, then around the lake down the Omeo Hwy. only met one log truck and it's a really good road. only went as far as Anglers Rest so I can't tell you past there but we talked to plenty of campers at Lightening Creek in big, huge buses and caravans and they had no hesitation going all the way through. Many had done it time and time again. This wasn't in snow though. It's beautiful!
you get plenty of black ice on that road from this time of year to about September, just be very careful I would only tow on that road in the summer months
Having travelled that road Quite a few times (Bright, Hotham, Omeo, Bruthen) your vehicle should be fine. My only advice is listen to the weather reports on the radio and TV.
Check with the local copper in Bright or which ever town just before you head on up they will have up to date reports if it is going to close in. Always a possibility at this time of the year, like I said local police know if it is going to snow
Agree with the above, traveled it in March with a 19 ft van but wouldn't do it at this time of year without being very sure of the weather. It has already snowed at Perisher.
Thank you to everyone who responded. I have taken all advice given on board. I will probably go from Tallangatta south within the next 7 to 10 days. Will certainly check road conditions before venturing south. Have driven a car in snow many times between Denver and Aspen CO., but I was a lot younger then, and had no chains. Don't fancy driving my MH in snow, with or without chains. My plan from Tallangatta is down the Omeo Hwy, not thru Bright on the Alpine, although I note from my maps the Omeo becomes the Alpine at Omeo. Long way to go back if I can't get thru to Bairnsdale !!!
