how to protect battery from over charge.

HI : I have a goldstream van when I bought not new it came with a 12volt transformer for lights when plugged in to 240v. my problem is it has 12v batteries installed for power when camping. The transformer charges batteries when connected to 240v. but there is only a manual switch to turn off power to batteries to  stop over charge. So far I have cooked to batteries because I for got about them.Is there any thing out there that will an automatic switch to cut off power to batteries when they are charged and to switch on when it needs a charge ???? Any help would be appreciated. pardon my typing its not one better attributed.

thanks

AL

I have a CTek charger which runs from 240 to 12 volt.

I cannot recall which actual model it is but it is a multi stage charger that can be connected full time and will condition your battery and then keep the battery topped up and never over charge. There are a few models and a good parts store should be able to point you in the right direction. I bought mine from Repco and it was on special at the time.
