WILD FLOWER TOURING IN W.A.

Hi All, We are in the process of planning a Wild Flower tour of central W.A. starting around September,

We are looking for any ideas from people who have done these tours ( with a caravan ) previously,

Having done a trip from Perth up through Wubin to Geraldton before, We are now looking at doing a trip taking in the Mid West, visiting places like York, Quairading, Corrigin, through Kondinin, Then up to Narembeen, Bruce Rock to Merredin . Just for starters.

All going well, We then may go on to Southern Cross, then turn North taking in Bullfinch, Mukinbudin, Nungarin, Wyalkatchem, Goomalling and finally taking in the Northam district before returning to Perth

If anyone has done this district in the past, we would like to hear of your thoughts and any suggestions of where there are free camps along the way, Also different areas you have seen and recommend seeing,

Our starting date is open so if anyone else would like to join us, you would be very welcome,  biggrinbiggrin

The first part of your trip sounds OK for starting early September. After that it would normally too late to go further north. By end of September you need to be in the Great Southern, Kojonup, Cranbrook etc. From the first Monday in October there will be a week of wild flower displays in those towns, and directions to native bush to wander through the flowers. After that week need to go south and south west. In the Great southern area and SW you will massive variety of flowers rather than the masses of the same further north. Kojonup has had up to 260 varieties collected within 20klm of the town. I have taken 1200 different flowers in a 2 week period on one wander through the area. I know on our farm we had an orchid that grew in a 20 metre area and never seen any where else.

All this will vary depending on weather. You need to ring ahead to information centres to get the up to date info of where to go and look.

There,s a booklet called "Wheatbelt Way" with a DVD showing a route taking in Dowerin,Koorda,Beacon , Westonia,Nungarin ,Wyally.,Muka, trayning visiting the rocks in the area .Had a mate do it with glowing reports it,s on my bucket list ,all the camps have toilets and most dump points and very little gravel. Web site is "www.wheatbeltway.com.au." which should show how to get the booklet.

Thanks for the reply Woolman, Yes you could be right about leaving it a little late to head north by then,  We could continue in a Southerly direction after doing the first stage of our trip.

We have just returned from Kalbarri and because of the recent rains in that area, there was a great display of Wild Flowers out already in bloom, funny thing nature, there's no set time table, just have to be in the right place at the right time.

Hi John,  many thanks for telling me about the Web Site, I've had a look at it and down loaded it in PDF form, this will come in very handy when we do our trip,

Do you know app what time of the year your Mate did this trip, ?  we have found in the past that one can miss the best showing of Wild Flowers by only a couple of days, I realise it will depend a lot on weather conditions, the biggest problem is being there at the best time as many flowers are only out for a short time,

Ji. Last year when we did the 'van and wildflower thing, I contacted the various councils and shires. It was amazing how many are geared up and have all the info you could possibly need to do this. Some have websites that are more sophisticated and informative than the Perth CC. You can find out the various shires/councils by goggling the various areas - llke wheatbelt, WA wild flower tours etc. Some of their info centres have actually set up their own sites just for this (the power of us travelers contributing to the local economy and the smarts that some of these small shires have !

Hi Guys

We have just came back from a three day trip through the central Wheatbelt, have a look at our posts for Bruce Rock & Oak Pak north of Goomalling on Wikicamps

We had a great weekend & you may want to try the bakery at Merredin & Bruce Rock.

G'day peter,  "Yep" know all about the bakeries in both Bruce Rock & Merredin, I used to work in that area a few years back, the pies they make in both places are to die for, and the fresh bread is 1000 times better than what one will ever get in the "Big Smoke".

I don't have access to Wikicamps, could you post something on this forum, in the Section = Free camps W.A. would be great .
