I have one also with OPTUS and find it works great in big towns and city areas but dicey in other locations...very touch and go when I am in Tin Can Bay but works in Pomona. Am seriously thinking about changing to Telstra for the big trip ( Telstra are a lot dearer but has better coverage I am told )

We use a telstra 3G that will run 5 items, so we run my laptop, and 2 Ipads. Works well but still have times when no reception, especially if down by a river.

Aussie Paul. smile

Can anybody tell me if these work better than a mobile phone as a wifi hot spot to a laptop.I have a heap of accumulated credit on my mobile and wonder if any difference. Do they have better reception than a mobile or same?

Cheers All

I have a Telstra 4g wireless modem one and my blue tick iPhone, I can connect an external antenna up on the roof of the van to the 4g but not phone.

Between both (using one or the other) I get cover most of the time. Having both on a plan is a bit exe though but it all works for me.

Edit... Sorry, forgot, I used my phone as a modem through turning on wifi and personal hot spot, works really well. iPad and Laptop can be run at same time through modem or phone and works well. I only got the modem as I was having trouble with phone sometimes inside van.

Unless your phone has aerial socket, it's not going to work any better than your modem as they both run off the same tower. I have the same as Dougwe and have a external aerial for modem, looking at getting a aerial adapter for the Iphone so I can use the external aerial for both.
We use the modem, when we are getting low on data we then switch on WIFI hotspot on the phones and use the data off our phone plans. So if the service is a bit dodgey we cant use the WIFI hotspot as we dont have the plug to hook into external aerial yet.

Hi jade, we have a iPad and two smart phones which we use as hotspots for my laptop, we are on the fringe ATM and just get one 4G bar but speed is ok as we don't download stuff.

Teltra is our carrier, a bit dear when compared to others but most places can get at least a 3G signal

Cheers

hi we have the telstra 4g modem and get reception more than our samsung phone. as above we have aerial connected to van and truck for the modem but even the unit by itself gives better reception. I recently purchased a Dave phone from telstra and it has aerial connection. I also installed a separate aerial for it on caravan. Where we currently are phone went from no bars to 4 bars however the internet on it is still slower than the modem. Hope this all makes sense, it does in my head lol.

further to answer question, they are good especially with aerial as you dont need to be plugged in to use tablet. We have ours on a shelf connected to power and aerial. out of way no cables to trip on.

Did you actually go to Telstra or Bigpond. Bigpond have better deals and also when you go over your limit it slows not like Telstra, where it can cost you extra or no internet at all. Check the two before signing up.

Dougwe with a Iphone 4 you really need one of these if you want better reception, but at $148.00 might be to much
