Sorry but what is a "GU"? Make of vehicle etc? If it has the tow capacity of 3.5+ t, I see no reason why not however, it is getting up there to max weight allowed. I personally like a bit of space with the max weight. I have a van that is around 2.8t and a car that has 3.5t capability to give me that spare weight as to not overwork the beast.

From what I've read over the years, the 4.2 TD is the engine of preference in the Patrols and seemingly bulletproof, so I'd say you have the right vehicle.

Towing at the max will show the short comings very quickly (stands to reason), if you have a look at http://beauexhausts.com.au. These guys are very good at what they do and having 2nd person experience it makes are huge difference to the towing performance. Their product is so good they actually fit better than the original system.
Some say you even get better fuel economy but my experience is that you tend to drive the veh a little harder and that destroys the economy but lot of fun, either way it's worth a google or a call.
Didn't give all info have 3'' stainless with 3'' dump, so with the feed back from the forum I feel comfortable @ ATM of up to 3200kg, looking @ Skytrax 'Frontier' or Option RV 'Traction',
the latter being 3400kg and the former 3100kg, once again appreciate feed back, cheers
