Mt Isa to Broome Stretch

Just a general question. Are there plenty of either caravan parks or free stays with lots of travelers staying overnight in this stretch and would you need to carry extra fuel or are the servos close enough not to have to worry about it.

We don't like to travel for too long in a day.

You shouldn't need to carry any extra fuel.   The longest stretch without a petrol station would be from Camooweal to Barkley Roadhouse on the Barkley Highway and that's only 261k.

There is plenty of traffic along this route and during the dry season lots of travellers.    There are free camps and caravan parks regularly along the route.    Along the Barkley Highway there are half a dozen free camps, basic with no facilities, but ok, and a caravan park with power if you need at the Barkley Roadhouse.    Then along Stuart up to Katherine there are lots of basic caravan parks and a couple of free camps.    Similarly along the Victoria Highway to Kununnurra there are a few free camps and caravan parks at Victoria River Roadhouse and at Timber Creek.

Don't hurry across that stretch of road Annie, there is great variety in scenery, and many other travellers to share it with.

You should stop over at Mataranka and enjoy the hot springs less than 1km from CVP. Also use the Show Grounds at Kununurra. Plus we stayed at the Roebuck Plains Roadhouse excellent rather than the parks in Broome.

Hi Annie,

I've been roaming around for 10 years now. I always carry 20 lt spare fuel. I put it into the car every 4 months, so it doesn't age.

It's saved my butt once in a forestry behind Gympie, I was given bad directions & would have run out or fuel.

It's diesel & I carry it in the tub of a dual cab. I wouldn't carry any fuel or gas in the cab & I wouldn't carry petrol in containers at all.

I guess it's a safety blanket for me, beats worrying about the fuel gauge all day.

Cheers Pete

Thanks everyone. Yes Pete, my husband wants to carry some diesel between towns that might be a little far if we get into a head wind. I think he plans on carrying it in the van, not in the car as we have a Terracam, not a ute.

I have done that same trip. Plenty of free camps and at no time did I need to carry any spare fuel, diesel. Heaps of roadhouses and heaps of free camps. Will be doing it again in a month or so.

I did not think Terracans were so thirsty that they would not do 300 km into a headwind.

Hmmm, think I need a 10lt Jerry can just in case, poor old "Roadworks" only has a small tank and with a headwind 261 k's would be cutting it real fine.

Make sure you carry plenty of liquid refreshments due to the buying of alcohol restrictions in NT and northern WA.
