hi all

can some body guide me trough how to connect my phone to my laptop by wireless I don't seem to have the settings right on the laptop urgent help please

Do you mean connect your phone to your laptop by bluetooth, or connect your phone to your wireless network?

edit: or... connect your laptop to the internet using your phone as a wireless hot spot?

Most laptops will have 802mhz wireless enabled - check.

My phone Telstra Dave - under settings allows me to turn on wifi OR turn on portable wifi hotspot (which I use).

My laptop then sees the offer to connect via wifi.

Hi guys

I have an iPhone and I connect the wifi hotspot on and the laptop picks it up, you enter the password and bingo all connected.

iPhone, Android, Samsung, Motorola, Sony and so the list goes on. Each connects differently there is no universal technique. Fast response can usually be found on the manufacturer's website as most provide some form of user forum.

the phone is a Samsung galaxy s4-gt-19505 laptop Compaq Presario cq56
I have my wifi and hot spot on in the phone but the laptop cant pick it up also have the wifi button on in the laptop

I don't know how tech savvy you are but I'll apologise now if this is too simple. You'll need to setup your hot spot options on your phone making note of the name given to the connection and the the password required for other devices to access the hot spot. This is usually found under the settings section of the phone under something like tethering and portable wi-fi hotspot. You'll also need to switch it on (there's usually something resembling a switch to the right of the menu that you have to tap to switch on - don't forget to switch it off when you've finished using it to preserve your data and prevent connection over-runs).

When that's all done refresh you computers internet connections. On Windows 7 you may have an icon in the bottom right of the screen that looks a little like a graph. Clicking on that should bring up a list of available wi-fi connections. If all has gone well one of them should be the phone connection you identified when setting it up. Double click on it to make the computer try to connect. This will usually bring up a pop-up asking for the password that you also would have noted when setting up the phone. Enter the password, click on complete and you should hopefully have your computer connected to the internet.

There are a couple of reasons why this may have happened. You didn't mention whether or not you'd set up your phone as a wi fi hotspot - see this for how to do this properly: www.samsung.com/au/support/skp/htg/16390

If the phone is set up properly then try to connect your computer via wi-fi. If it still doesn't work click on either of the lines of blue text to either trouble shoot the connection or go to the networks centre and try setting up a new network. If is still won't work then, if it was me, I's be off to my friendly computer fix-it place with the phone and laptop because I've exhausted my know how.

hi all update
well laptop went to in for repair not good news some thing badly wrong with windows itself not worth fixing he tried all the simple things but would not work on most of them so looks like a new one but thanks all for the help

What? he couldn't fix an operating system fault? I'd take it to someone that has half a clue mate.. even if you had to reload windows.. or better yet, dump windows and put Linux mint on it.

The one I'm using at the moment is 6 years old and running Linux Mint on it. And it runs much better than it ever did with windows on it.

Snap, it's probably easier for you to just back up anything you have on your computer and reload windows on yours. Or if you aren't confident in that, get someone else to do it for you.

Linux Mint is free open source software. you can get it from here, but you'll need plenty of data allocation to download the initial installation disk iso file. It's 1.3GB. Then you'll need to get someone to install it for you again if you aren't confident. And you'll need to learn how to use it. It's not that difficult though. Plus any software you use is generally available free also. eg. Libre Office Suite, varios paint and graphics progs. Heaps of stuff actually.

 Downloading the file will take a fair bit out of your download allowance. If you look at Troopy's link you will see the download file is 1.3GB. If you are still wanting to look at it and can't spare that download then look at this site - 

                    OSDisc.com

 -  Just click on the graphic. There are all the popular flavours of Linux there. Go to Project: Linux Mint

 and you see the selection of disks and flash drives you can order (the flash drives are for those without DVD drives in their machines.) All these will start your computer in Linux if you have the disk or flash drive in place when you start your machine up. Just remember to order the appropriate 32 or 64 bit version depending on whether you have a 32 0r 64 bit bus in your computer.

Alternately look for the Linux magazines in the newsagents. They come with disks of software and Linux distributions.
