2nd Battery


Hi Guy's  A battery question for you experts. I had a second battery in the back of my 2000 Navara till some enterprising person twisted the handles on my rear canopy window to open it (yes it was locked)and just helped themselves to the battery along with some other stuff.  My fridge happily was in my house at the time. My question is now I need to put a battery back in what's the best type? I am going to have to chain this one down some how. Any help would be gratefully appreciated. I would sooner find the right type than blindly putting a standard one back in.

I run a 85 amp deep cycle for the Engel and air compressor but when it lets me down I will be replacing it with a 120 amp. We have a crew cab Nissan with a canopy my plan is to have it  plated and bolted above the inner mud guard.

I feel this is a wasted place in a small ute area and had done this before with a Rodeo ute, worked well, out of hams way, right over the drive wheels hooked up to my electrics.

Im sure you will get a lot of replies soon to your question John - it really depends on how much you want to pay and how much space you have. A 120amh gell cell would serve you well. The trick is to pick the battery type and with sufficient "grunt" that you do not lower its charge so low that it wont ever fully charge/hold its charge again and becomes only fit for the rubbish bin.

If you don't get a common recommendation on this thread, suggest you go talk to a couple (don't trust one) of auto sparkies and even Battery World (don't trust them - they will usually try to sell you their most expensive battery) if you have one nearby

I forgot to mention we are using Lion Batteries mostly because I don't mind the guy and for the most agrees with me right or wrong.

From experience with them quality of the battery has been very good.

1 small European car 3 ks each way 4 times a day for 4 years still going strong after 7 years.

1 Japanese car our everyday hack just come up to 4 years sold it, lucky to of got 2 years from spare parts shop batteries.

Second battery in ute 18 months going strong.

 Caravan battery  15 months going strong.

Previous van battery was 3 years old but the frig malfunctioned and 3 times it drove it flat before I work up there was something wrong.

I find in general they are a reasonably good battery for the price,  I have nothing to do with the company, just spend money hopefully not as much as I have for next few years.

Rather than chain and lock just the battery (the fridge could be next ) just get very dark window tint on canopy windows so no one can see what you have inside. Side mirrors look after rear vision adequately. My recomendation would be a deep cycle AGM for your replacement battery unless you want to look at LiFePo4 batteries.

For running the fridge you'll probably be cycling the battery fairly heavily. You would be better off with a VRLA Gel rather than AGM and fitting a low voltage cutoff is probably a good idea if it is likely to sit for a day or two without driving.

Hi Guy's thanks for the suggestions battery over the wheel arch sounds a nifty idea. I will be taking all your suggestions on board doing my homework then ask a few experts, and look for an overall general consensus that will suit my usage. Reading your replies there seems to be more into this than I thought I have just had the rear re-lined, so not too keen at the moment to move it. And I already have dark tint on my canopy windows. and still did not stop the thieves. I have mounted a $25 vibration alarm inside the canopy. hanging from an existing eye hole that makes a high pitched whistle when you touch the handles of the rear canopy a desperate move but it's very loud.
