Nice gesture Jim. My thoughts are why do we need Indonesia ? Our PM can't help himself, crawling up the new President's ass. Stop the aid Dollars.. Stop all direct flights between Australia and Indonesia. For those who must go there, many flights available thru Singapore. Bali is not so spectacular. There are numerous better holiday destinations off our east coast. Solomons, Vanuatu, Noumea, Fiji, Tahiti, Cook Islands, New Zealand. Why should we be assisting barbarians !!

Ken. Most of us agree, but whether we like it or not, Indonesia takes most of our export cattle. Our cattle farmers and all those rural businesses and towns would be bankrupt within a few months if we did what you suggest.
Im not a farmer, but travelled through various areas where live exports to Indonesia were the only income source, a few months age live exports were banned a couple of years ago for animal brutality (again totally unacceptable) and the farmers, truckies, shops - everyone were going rapidly down the toilet. In Northern WA and NT, many farmers are still walking off their properties, selling to overseas buyers and having their properties grabbed by the bank as a result of that export ban from Canberra

Then maybe if our exports get banned again that's good Maybe we who live here will get it a damn sight cheaper..... Meat Fruit.. Do we need to rely on Indonesia I think Not

Indonesia and Australia have a bilateral trade of approx $6billion each way. In the scheme of things this is a pittance and can be made up in our FTA's with China and Japan.
If we decide to take action on what they are up to in West Papua then they will get a blood nose from sanctions etc.
Either way I don't trust their Islamic leadership but their military is largely on side with us.
As former barbarians, we have become very righteous all of a sudden (remember we had the death penalty until recently, and we were demanding it for the Bali bombers).
If we cut off relations with Indonesia, a significant proportion of Australians would suffer, but not very many Indonesians would, they would just find other sources for beef, tourists, and drug trafficers.
Thanks for your input everyone. However, just as a reminder, we really don't want political discussions on this forum. Experience has taught us that these kinds of discussions lead to bad feelings.
