G'day Ray, when we were down that way, about 5 years back, there was a pub on the intersection of the highway, where you turn off to Wine Glass Bay, for the cost of a feed at the pub, you could pull your van round the back and free camp for the night with free use of their amenities.

Hi Ray - if you go to the Free/Budget Camp Sites sub forum on the Grey Nomads here, you will find some terrific spots listed under the Tasmanian section.
They are updated regularly as people travel this great land. Enjoy Tassy - we did four months over there and loved all of it.

Hey Ray (it rhymes haha). As well as the great stuff on this Forum, do you have wikicamps? I use both.
Wikicamps is an app and good for android and Apple smart phones/tablets and Windows v8.1 Costs $8 a year. Actually shows a map section which has all of Aust on it - zoom into the areas you want and shows all the caravan parks and free camps that wikicamps members (and theres a lot of them) have listed. You can also get it as a free trial and if you don't like it - don't pay anything

Hi Jim, can you be a little more specific? I have searched up and down near the Coles Bay Road intersection of the Tasman Highway. I can't find a building that looks like it may have a pub. How far from the intersection do you remember it being?

There is a large area at Conara on Midland Hwy, Old Macs Farm 4klms from Launceston and a handy spot at Latrobe next to the IGA Supermarket (direction from info centre) $10 per night. Enjoy.
Scottsdale has a great free camp area with hot showers(You pay for the showers) Forth has self contained camping at the Rec ground. Many small towns offer free or budget camping. No pub at the intersection of main highway and wine glass bay (Coles Bay) turn off.
I think you might be a bit of a confused there - the pub in question may be the Dunally Pub, on the road to Port Arthur - Dunally township and a lot of the surrounding areas were devastated in the fires 2012/13 - only one in seven houses were left standing in the town, the pub owners own house was burnt to the ground, as well as the bakery, the general store was badly damaged, the saw mill burnt out. Through all of that you could still camp at the pub.
To go to Coles Bay, Wineglass Bay - there is Friendly Beaches campground ($), or Rivers and Rocks - bit dusty, with a pit toilet, but free.

We are in Tassie at the moment ....not camping this trip, just brought the car and have been staying in cabins and motels as we were only going to stay for a week to 10 days ...but stuck here waiting for ferry booking at end of month .... Yes, did not book return - can get us back now, but not the car!! We are currently enjoying some enforced time at Port Huon ... Visited Southport Pub and drove to ****le Creek .... Lots camping down there in the wind and cold, but the beaches were absolutely beautiful .... Not free camping as in National Park.
anyway, we stopped at a tourist info somewhere in the South East this morning and they had a book listing all the free camps in Tassie .... Stacks of them. .. $20. Apart from that,,we saw people stopped everywhere on our drive from Queenstown across the forests to the South east ..... On all the lakes through there we saw people camping .... Not sure if legal. anyway, I intend to buy the book on our way north in about a week So next visit we won't be caught short by not booking the return ticket!
good luck ......

Myrtle Park is a lovely spot - a lot of monster trees there. If you are going to the Tahune (Huon area) and visiting the skywalk in the forest, they had a hang glider on a cable ride, pretty cheap - $12 I think - a great experience swooping down over the rocky and fast flowing Huon River. We were able to camp in their carpark overnight, as we did both the walk and the hang glider ride.
