We are looking at travelling from Winton down to Windorah over this winter and was wondering if anyone had stayed a night or two at Old Cork Station that might be able to provide some infomation on what is there or things to look out for?
Welcome to the forum, This is a picture of the Diamintina from the Old Cork camp ground taken 20/6/14. At the time it was pretty dry & dusty as to be expected.
A couple of days at the Diamintina NP would be good. Have plenty of pictures of the homestead but that would spoil it for You.
We stayed there 3 years ago and it's a great stay for a few days ,just keep an eye on the weather as it black soil roads and we had to pack up at 4 am as it started to rain we hightailed it before we got
stranded.
A friend was managing Cork Station in the 70's and 80's (Arthur Wallis) and took us out to 'Old Cork' . A beautiful place on the Diamantina River. The stone house was still intact with the roof and with a bit of old furniture. I believe it is now just a ruin - the furniture was stolen in the 90's. I think there is a group in Winton who are trying to preserve what is left. It was the original settlement but after several floods they moved to where Cork homestead is now. This "new' homestead was actually transported from Charters Towers in the early 1900's.
