annoying advertising

How do you stop the advertising on the site from continually changing, I know it is for the forums benefit but it is using my small downloads

Ken

There is a good article on it in Wikipedia - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ad_filtering -

There are a few programmes you can add to your browser to fight these ads. Popup Ad Stopper - Advertisement stopper - AdBlock - Adblock Plus - Popup Ad Stopper - Super AdBlocker -Ad Killer

I think if you can kill the ads you will also probably kill this forum as they are a source of income for the forum owners.
Good Luck.

I very much doubt it Hako.

While Adblock Plus is simple to set up and very effective, most people won't bother.

An added feature is of course because ads don't load connections to pages you visit speed up, so, no ads = less data use, faster internet connection and cleaner looking web pages.

This is what Wikipedia has to say about ad blocking programs.

"Benefits

To users, the benefits of ad blocking include quicker loading and cleaner looking Web pages free from advertisements, lower resource waste (bandwidth, CPU, memory, etc.), and privacy benefits gained through the exclusion of the tracking and profiling systems of ad delivery platforms. Blocking ads can also save substantial amounts of energy.

Another important aspect is improving security; according to some research, online advertising subjects users to a higher risk of infecting their devices than surfing porn sites. In a high-profile case malware was distributed through advertisements provided to YouTube by a malicious customer of Google's

Users who pay for total transferred bandwidth ("capped" or pay-for-usage connections) including most mobile users worldwide, have a direct financial benefit from filtering an ad before it is loaded."

Owners of web sites that rely on advertising may not like it, however its a legitimate, legal and valuable tool, so, I use it.smilehttps://adblockplus.org/

The icons for the ads are loaded when the GN page is loaded, each is essentially a link to the advertiser's website. The changing icons are not eating into your download limit as it's all built into the page - if you disconnect your internet connection the ads still flash and change. I run NoScript on Firefox and it blocks a lot of ads that use javascript and flash videos, but not the ads on this site. I'm not bothered by them, mainly because for most of the time when perusing the site I don't see them anyway.

Hey Ken, rest easy mate in a past life I was a Graphic Designer and worked on many web sites and still manage a few.  The images you are refering to are .GIF's they are very small and once you visit a page they are more or less cached by your computer so when you look at another topic that uses the same image your browser will source them from cache memory. So in effect the image is downloaded once and lives in your internet history so it can be used many times over.  Effectively they are ussually only downloaded once then used many times.

I've had a look at the images themselves and they are very small and collectively put together they are a lot smaller than the header pages of most websites you will visit. The biggest image there is 35Kb which is nothing when it comes to a webpage. So, if your internet usage is being chewed up, I doubt very much it's from this forum because in my opinion the pages here are very fast loading even on a slow connection and that equates to very good optimised pages.

If however you are deleting internet history when you close your browser, then may I suggest that you change the settings to delete after say 7 days.  Doing this will help with the speed on pages you regularly visit.  My self, I delete history manually only when my PC seems to be running a bit slow.

My browser gives me three options:

View -> Images -> Show Images
View -> Images -> Cached Images
View -> Images -> No Images

I choose "cached" by default. If I need to see a particular uncached image, I r-click its placeholder and select "Reload Image".

BTW, this web site calls home every 2 minutes or so. Previously I have observed a call-home frequency of 10 seconds. This behaviour stops if I disable Javascript.

I tried to download some of these and they come with other unwanted programs that can't be edited out on download. I found this one that did the trick:

OH,Thank You..Thank You..
I tried Adblocker Plus and am very pleased.
We d/load a fair few TV shows & the occasional movie ( Yes, it is naughty ) & there is a constant battle to close all the unwanted ads.
Fixed--Gone.. No longer an issue.
Grey Nomads Forum is tops again.
