wikicamps

Hi, I need a better understanding of the basics of what is needed to use wiki camps on an android phone_ samsung s5. Do you need to download an offline maps program to use wiki without an internet connection ? I really have no idea how it all works, so if some knowlegable folks can sort me out I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks John

Meetoo, you need to download offline maps from within wikicamps app. And if you want to see the comments and pic offline you also need to download offliine data also within wikicamps.

On the map page in the app you can choose to use offline or online maps if you have a connection too.

Hi John. Im a computer dummy, but I have a Galaxy Tab4 tablet and downloaded the wikicamps app.

It is really easy to use - trust me lol

The only thing you may muck up are the map filters - one day its showing all the free, low cost and CP's with all the facilities and the next time you go on, it looks like an ordinary road map and all these features have gone.

If that happens, you accidently changed the settings - its just a matter of playing round with the filters and after a while (I mean minutes, not weeks) you will get the hang of it.

The most amazing thing about Wikicamps is the "comments" on each site. One person will say its the best thing since sliced bread and then another a couple of days later will say its disgusting lol. Shows you various peoples expectations I guess.

I spend a lot of time planning routes for future travels - it has a neat feature called "favourites" and it will mark all the sites with a heart symbol as a potential place you might stay in when going that way

You'll love Wikicamps John (but I still keep an up to date Camps book, in case technology fails me and I have to physically turn pages haha)

Hmmm, I can't see where you get to choose. Could that be as I have only downloaded the app, and the maps, but havn't paid yet. It seems to be having an issue with paypal.

I'm not sure about the unpaid version, but when you are in the map page, touch the map settings icon that looks like a couple of cogs, in the upper left corner of the screen. From there you can select online/offline maps and a few other different settings.

Ive played with Wiki a lot since I downloaded it about 6 weeks ago, but haven't travelled with it yet - our next on the road is about 4 weeks away (waiting for the next round of warranty repairs on our new 'van).

Can someone tell me who has used Wiki a lot on the road for CPs and free/low cost camping, how good the site info is and the comments for the sites (yep, know one person reckons it the pits and then the next say its fantastic) - in the past have used Camps book, but keen to know if you rely on Wiki to find places and then make your own call when you arrive.

I notice there are a lot of sites listed, but with no features, star ratings, no comments, no pics and wonder why they are on Wiki at all, because I understand its us, the users, that create all these sites in the first place.....

I haven't used it under fire yet, just played around with it a bit here and there. I reckon a lot of sites may have been added by people after they had visited the spots possibly when going back through some of their trip notes maybe? And yes, I think you need to take the comments with a teaspoon (more than a grain) of salt. Some comments are totally ridiculous, or posted by people with ridiculous expectations of free and low cost camp sites.

We've been using Wikicamps for about a year now and wouldn't swap it, its a brilliant little app that keeps on getting better. In answer to the OPs initial question there is no need to download anything in order for the app to work. On an android system it automatically uses Google maps but an another mapping app can be used if you have one you prefer. Much of the info available on Wikicamps can be downloaded so the app will work offline, this function is pretty limited in my experience. To do this tap the "Offline Content" on the opening page and on the page that then opens select what you wish to download then wait for ages while it does it. Also on the opening page is an icom for Help and FAQ. Tap it and you'll be given a list of FAQs that can be helpful in solving issues you have with the software. Finally, if all that doesn't work try the Chat Forum - also accessed from the opening page. You can also get information from the Wikicamps website.

We use Wikicamps to identify sites where we like to stay but that is not the only source we use. There are heaps of sites that will provide some information about CPs or free sites just google the site name. Once we have selected a site we use the in-vehicle GPS to get there but also use the Wikicamps "Directions" function to get the final few kilometres as a lot of sites don't give a street number that can make the last bit of travel confusing when relying on the in vehicle GPS.

The trial version of Wikicamps is not crippled and provides users with full functionality for the trial period.

Hope you get it sorted,

Regards

Dave
