I inherited a Macpro and was given an IPad. The Macpro almost went out the door numerous times till I got my head around it. I am very happy with both now especially the IPad. The biggest plus with both is I don't seem to get junk as in pop-ups, and viruses and the likes. I am a happy Apple user.
Unfortunately she also has a group of friends and acquaintances she communicates with who are unable to open many of the attachments created on her fruit machine, so, whenever she has something important to circulate she jumps on one of my MS puters.
I thought Apple Maps was reasonable until I asked it to find directions to Darwin from Brisbane. No problem finding its way to the Stuart Highway in the NT, but instead of turning right and heading 658km north to Katherine and onto Darwin ... turn left toward Alice Springs 513km, turn right onto Tanami road and head west for 1015km, turn onto Great Northern Hwy for a further 155km to Halls Creek, north for 331 km to Kununnurra then east for 558km to Katherine and finally north on Stuart Hwy for 300km to Darwin. A total detour of 2100 km through the outback desert! Thanks Apple.

I would seriously question you choice of using Apple Maps in the first place.
Why have you not loaded Google maps on to your Apple device?

All well and good. But over the years I have serious doubts about Windows based and Apple based computer devices.
I stated back when punched cards were the norm. Seen DOS, then Windows and Apple progress and all I get is a level of blot ware.
Neither system is perfect.
Apple:
Has no real method within the OS to defray and optimise the HD. If you want to do these operations go buy a third party piece of software.
Has a third party option Parallels for Windows people or other OSs to run their loved OS
Has Bootcamp to run Windows. But its restrictive Win7 min allowed now. Also you have to own a legal Win copy of the OS and possible what ever you put on Bootcamp.
You can back up your Apple side of the computer, if you have spare HD about 2T worth of space. BUT you can't back up bootcamp.
Windows:
Its built in defrag software is abysmal and non optimising.
Constant updates.
No builtin full system, application back up. Go buy your own at the usual price.
IExplorer is a pain. Seems to be getting worse with each incarnation.
Vista and Win 8 were flops. Hit lots who suffered. Also till now if you upgraded you OS you paid the usual arm and leg.
Use both and not overly impressed. So I don't extol the benefits of either.

Me neither, I'm using Linux Mint 17 at the moment on an older laptop that came with Vista (which wasn't all that bad anyway, just very much bloated as you say) But I also Have a laptop with windows 8.1, which I hardly ever use, and a desktop with with XP. The wife uses a laptop with win 7 on it, and for what she does she seems to be OK with that. Actually last night I was using my Android Asus Transformer running Android 4.? for browsing and replying to emails etc. Then I downloaded a couple of free apps to watch catchup TV in bed on it. So yes different tools for different jobs... the prices vary greatly though.
The best thing about using Mint though, is it doesn't cost a cent, nor do the programs I run on it. It has free software to take the place of most of the things I do from day to day, but hard to find specialised software like Navdesk for updating my Navman (their software has to be the worst around anyway), and software to program my UHF CB's (which tend to be DOS based anyway) I can run a bit of Microsoft based software using Wine, which is a kind of windows interpreter, though.
I have tried a couple of other "flavours" of linux, but so far mint 17 seems to work best for me.
But yes all systems have their pros and cons.
