I walked out into a very busy betting ring (horse racing) and handed to the young betting steward working that day, an old fashioned phone that I had unplugged from the wall, saying "it's a call for you", without hesitation he took the receiver and asked into it "who's calling". The whole betting ring watched on as he continued to ask "who's calling, who's calling" as he held the receiver, phone and wall cord. I just had to walk away!
Needless to say I was looking for a new betting steward a week later.
Reading about phones made me smile as I do every time I think of a particular instance with a phone.
Where I was working in the eastern states, we had a shutdown on and the leading hand fitter came in and asked if he could use the office phone. No dramas from me but he was very stressed about things that had not gone to plan and a was little bit under the pump.
He grabbed the handpiece, dialled the number and was getting agitated when the call didn't seem to go through........... I glanced across and next door to the phone was a large desktop calculator and in his haste he had "dialled" the number on the calculator keypad (Grin) = as the emoticons don't seem to be working.
I still take the mickey out of him every time I see him - but God bless him = he has a heart of gold and he was always very conscientious and focussed on his responsibilities. I know he'll forgive me if he ever gets to see this posted.
