we are looking at getting Uhf for the car ,do i buy a hand set, or a complete built in one , it will only be used every now and then while we are travelling. if i was to buy just a couple of hand sets what size or power would be ok
Hi Cowboy 7307 ,we're in the same boat ,not too sure what to get.We were thinking of a couple of hand sets ,good for when we are parking
the truck and the wife outside telling me where to go or maybe when we go metal detecting and we get seperated ,there is probably a thousand and one uses that it can be used for .
A couple of hand sets would be all you guys would need, some of the radios come with a switch to change from 1watt to 5watts which is the max for CB, also some of the better hand- helds come with removable Antenna"s which are good in case you break one or want to improve your performance.
Some are cheap and you get a cheap performance, and some are very dear.

Hi guys I just purchased a GME Tx3100 ,terrific little unit , 5 watts of power , 80 channel auto squelch and about the size of 2 matchboxes .and you can flip it upside down for convenience. Oh $ 180 .
we have a car set and 2 hand-helds - all 5 watt. We hardly use the h/helds but always have one on charge just in case as we find cameras do the job for backing and hooking up van.
The car set has the unit hidden behind the dash and ony the handpiece with all the controls attached along with it curly cord are visible.
We got the adhesive letter box numbers from a hardware shop and with a little bit of superglue stuck "CH 40" on rear of van.
Now, most overtaking trucks will let you know when they intend to overtake you or even chat with you - and in the country (well in WA anyway), theres no bad language other than the odd 4 letter word lsipping out in Perth city.
We have Ormicon (bought on special for all 3 at caravan show and handhelds come with belt clip and remote mike on curly cord that you can clip wherever (no - not there....its a strong clip).
The biggest decision is the aerial selection. There are basically 3 sizes and they determine the range of the radio depending on topography of land ( usually short, medium and long aerials). There are other detailed posts here about aerials - do a search and they will pop up or go onto to goggle and type in "UHF aerials". Unless you want long range (long for UHF anyway), you are better to get the aerial that is about 1.5 m long and attach it to your nudge or roo bar , if you have either

A helpful tip if you are going to install an aerial on your nudge/bull bar. Run an earth wire from the aerial base to the bodywork of your vehicle. Over the years corrosion can build up and limit your aerial. With the earth wire fitted you negate this problem.

Ground Independant and Raised Feed antennas don't require the base to be grounded.

We carry a uniden unit in the ute and have 2 hand helps for parking. Most of the time we can use the phones which gives me (the driver) hands free to listed to directions, it's only in the bush where signal is zero we have to use the CB although we haven't used it much it's still a valuable tool.
I have a GME hands free. Great whilst driving. Good range. Its built into the dash. Probably a bit expensive, but saves me running off the road looking for a handset and using buttons.
