Issue wit Trailermate

I have a friend who is having issues with his TrailerMate. This is what he has told me....

I wonder if anyone can offer a solution?

"Trailmate does not go up or down with the pump handle. Have bleed air from the cylinder and checked fluid level ( it was down so refilled to within 20mm of top as instructed and still no power to lift. Can move by hand dragging the cylinder up or down but no movement with the pump handle

Seems from instruction there is a check valve inside that may need replacing but where do I get one and how do I fit it????"

Here's a thread on this topic on another forum

Seems like this is a common problem with a less than $50 kit fix.

Your friend has bent the external shaft of the unit.

They can be replaced at $33- plus postage $22-.

Contact  details are on the drive shaft.

We have been required to replace the shaft twice in the past 6 months.

You will find if the van is not straight and when unhitching the unit there will be movement causing the shaft to bend out of alignment.

We went to the distributor in Adelaide (house sitting close by) and he suggested that we use a piece of checker plate to allow some movement..

Thanks for these responses. I will pass this on to John.

P.S. I am trying to persuade him to join the Forum. It has been a great help to me and I am sure he too would find it worth joining. He too has a lot of experience he could pass on to others as well... (come on John, join the Forum mate smilesmilesmile)

revemike use the jockey wheel on trailmate that

will let the front move and not bend the jack

that is why they supply a wheel

Mike, does the pump have a lot of resistance when you pump it? If the piston shaft is bent then there should be considerable resistance when you try to pump it up. The fact that your mate "Can move by hand dragging the cylinder up or down" seems to tell me that it is not bent. Caravan club friends have been using thes for all this century and I have never heard of them bending before today.

I reckon your mate needs a repair kit for the unit - http://caravansplus.com.au/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=2280 - as you can see it comes with a DVD video instruction.

Thanks PeterD. I will pass this on. I tend to agree with you. I have been using one too for a few years now and have not had issues with them either ( the one my friend has is my first one, I sold to him when I got a new one with my new Retreat caravan).

The van I used this one on was not heavy on the ball and nor is his van so I dobut it has been bent.

All suggestions are great as one will no doubt help sort this out for him.

cheers, Mike.

Always a problem selling something to a relo or mate.

Almost like giving a lifetime warranty.

I hear you. And I agree...

Ken, the unit was working fine and continued to work fine as John used it on his Qld sojourne in 2014.smilesmile

It started misbehaving when he returned to Tasmania furiousfurious

G'day Mike ... from memory there is a seal in the housing that the lever pumps up and down. If the seal is leaking maybe that it's not pumping. You can get a seal replacement kits from Trailermate or most caravan spare parts place. They have a very instruction DVD that comes with the replacement kit it's very easy ... trust I did mine with no problems

Cheers

Alby
