Hi, Is there anybody out there that can tell us the best places to catch barramundi, starting our trip late march heading north Western Australia then over the top into Qld, then carry on around the rest of Aust We did try at Tomato Island NT free camping then (not anymore) the odd ones caught no luck us. also tried King Ash Bay same thing 40k round trip no luck. went to Normanton wrong year they were traveling 120k round trip to catch one and very few catches. Not a very big wet we were told so not many barra around. Was also told you have to have cheribin (sm prawn like creature) for bait, is there anything else that can be used other then trawling.
Hi Val, Ive been on the road for 9 years now, and you seem to have been to all lthe top spots for Barra. I would suggest though that you get yourself a cast net. Learn to throw it and get yourself some live bait. You will always get live bait. Barra love live bait.

Live bait is definately the go. I have caught plenty of Barra on live herrings and live prawns. I usually use a running rig with a forty pound trace and a wide gap live bait hook.

If there is such a thing as a tourist season.... why cant we shoot them?
Daly river (NT) late April/May is when they have the BIG fishing competitions in the NT.
Depends on the duration of the Wet. They had to postpone the Barra Nationals a couple of years ago due to late rain. Instead of early April they moved to late May. Instead if catching 1200-1600 Barra the catch that year was over 2600!
These competitions are strictly Catch & Release. Interstate competitors (& there are many) are allowed to keep one only on the last day.
