Welcome to the forum Tom.

It sounds as if you have really thought things through, and understand how you will use your vehicle, and then which style of vehicle would be the best compromise across the range.

You offer good advice.

Now that sort of intel is fantastic.  We are awaiting the sale of our house first preferably but would buy the vehicle beforehand if we could get a really good deal.

Many thanks and happy travels.

Cheers

The 2013 & 14 models have the u speed box, which improves driveability and economy, we tow our van which weighs 3.4T loaded and sits high on independent suspension, our typical economy towing is under 14l/100k, the worst we have seen was almost 16.

Plendo, we are currently looking at what tug to replace our 200 series Landcruiser. So far have or found anything that meets all the criterions. Looked at a VW Toureg, but the good one is a lot more expensive.

On the assumption that your fuel consumption is true, we will look at the Disco.

 Larry,

I knew the Disco was going to be good towing, but since I have had it I am blown away by just how good it really is, especially in the circumstance where we are sitting on a highway, and I can just leave it in cruise, typically the cruise is set between 96 and 100k indicated (92 & 96 actual).

The last trip up to Greens from Lilydale via Yarra Glen, Yea, Seymour, Murchison, Tatura, and Stanhope we ran up on 13.9 indicated. The car was then showing 13.8 when I filled it about 50k (without van) in Shepparton it resulted in a real economy of 14.3. I towed up to Yea between 90 and 95, then dropped down to 85 to 90 between Yea and Shepparton, then when i hit the Goulbourn Valley Highway I set the cruise on 100. After Murchison I was travelling between 90 and 100k indicated.

The reverse trip was almost identical speed wise, except that I slowed a bit more between Seymour and Lilydale (van was feeling nervous), and the indicated economy was identical, I did not fill it for a few days, so was not able to compare the actual.

Economy without the van, ranges from 8.2 on a trip, to 11 on solid city use.

This is a 2013 SDV6 SE, with the 600nm engine, and the 8 speed box.

I hope this helps you with your research.

Thank you to all contributors.  I am blown away by your generosity in time and experience.  We are now completely changing our 'top 5 contenders' list!!!! I am sure we will enjoy the test driving. Now it's about the rig and that is a whole new adventure!!

Has anyone had any experience with kokoda caravans, specifically the Achiever?

Happy and safe travels.

Cheers
