One of many examples is how quick they are to shoot someone dead when they are threatened with a knife. Surely a bullet to the legs is not a big ask when your opponent is less then 6 feet away.

===================================================

In a previous life, around 40 years ago.hmm I also worked for a security company, that required a Pistol License I am Not an aggressive personality, and really had no wish to Shoot anyone or anything, One of the directors, was A gunsmith and licensed gun dealer and '' Pre - Licence testing'' He would take us to his farm property, where he had a Shooting range set up, His method of teaching was

1/ DO NOT draw your weapon, unless you are prepared to use it, ! and only If yours, or the Publics safety is at risk ?

2/  IF, FORCED TO FIRE,  aim for the larger mass, 'ie' centre of body,

3/ Pull the trigger, more than once, [ as you could Easily Miss the target, ??

On the ''Static'' targets I was pretty Chuffed with my results. and thought   ''Hey Wyatt Earp'' eat ya heart out

So I said to the Instructor, WHY ? should i shoot to kill, ? why can't I just shoot his legs out from under him. >>  [ hey i am a pretty good shot ? ]

He had met ''smart- a-ses like me before, ? and had 5 mechanical body targets set up, Where as You retreat backwards, the targets would pop up one after the other, at about 4 mtr intervals,

I did that course, ?? stepping back and shooting at the legs, whilst the Instructor was yelling and hurling abuse at me . To make the situation seem Real.?

Out of the 5 Shots I took, ? I HIT THE LEG, ONCE, !! the other 4  I missed, -- Although one of the misses ensured that the offender would no longer be able to Father Children aww  ---

The situation Never arose, in the short time that I was licensed,  HOWEVER, if It had, I would have followed my Instructors directions to a ''T'' ?? and Aimed straight at the offenders Chest and pulled that trigger at least 3 times,, Why, ? because I am the Good Guy here, and if only One of us is going home, ?? IT is Me,

Paul.. Where the evidence is Rock, solid..

- DNA evidence..
- Caught holding the smoking gun, evidence of handling and shooting the gun.knife etc. Forensic is damn good in today environment..

- Video Evidence.. You name it.

A proven case of " they did it " You betcha I think they should not be around to do anymore damage.. The Jill Meagher, the guy/rapist was on Bail for committing Rape his 2nd offense..

Julian Knight.. Hoodle Street Massacre.. 7 people dead..

The father who killed his own son in front of the sons friends... The courts had been warned he was Violent..

Do I have to name anymore..

Sorry I'm very opinionated on this topic and think it should be an eye for an eye... We don't need these people around as they are costing use over $150K Plus per year to keep them in jail..

I'm with you on that one, but, how many get off through some fancy defence lawyer pleading mental disorder. At the end of the day they are broken and try as we might we do not have the tools to fix it. Death sentence and that's the end of it, and yes there may be some collateral damage.

PS I suppose Cindy is probably thinking it's time to close this thread.

"...for what conceivable reason are Police stopping cars?

For the previously stated "random drug & alcohol tests".

I have been driving for nearly 50 years and have only received on ticket (Bloody camera)

I agree with all those supporting the Police.

When we moved here to the NT I was amazed at the lack of random breath tests, given the attitude to drinking and driving I was witnessing. Thankfully, this has now changed, and a lot more are being caught & put off the road.

Regarding "revenue raising" cameras I disagree. One camera in Darwin reduced the number of red light runners from 2500 a month (when it was first installed) to less than 500 a month. That's 500 less chances EACH WEEK of someone being hit at that intersection alone.

How many times have you wished there was a cop in the car behind you to see what that other silly bugger had just done?

DEFEND THE POLICE OR DEFEND YOURSELF.

Hi all,

Pretty emotive stuff here in a couple of the posts, however there are a couple of very incorrect statements made.

Firstly, Police powers are State-specific and not national, unless you are talking about Federal Legislation, which is a slightly different situation.

There are various situations where a person "can be required to accompany Police" even if they are not under arrest. Refer "Drugs Misuse Act" and Transport Operations Road Use Management Legislation in Queensland, just to name a couple.

I don't know what the current statistics are but twenty years ago, about 70% of crime clear-up was attributable directly or indirectly to vehicle interceptions. I doubt if there would be any appreciable difference. Likewise, it is my experience that most complaints about hooning and anti social driver behaviour relates to the "burbs".

After having worn a blue shirt for the better part of my adult life, (sometimes at great expense to my own family), I still take offence at the term "pig" as used in one particular post. More to the point, I continue to have regular contact with former work mates who continue to suffer from the effects of having spent so much of their lives as "pigs".

I wish you Merry Christmas and a happy and healthy New Year. Remember, not too much ham on the Christmas table; it is bad for you.

P.S Now what was that about hostile postings and people leaving the forum. Perhaps this could be another example.

When I was a young lad Many years ago unfortunatly

The Police were held in great respect by the community

This has changed enormously in my life time now days

A large percentage of the population hold the police in contempt

But I think we tend to blame the police for this and not there

Masters the politicians so maybe we should blame the voters

Who put these learned gentlemen and women in power

We respected the cops then because if they found you doing something wrong it would be a kick up the bum and taken home for your old man to kick you up the bum. Now the politically correct brigade have made it impossible for the police to police. Just watch the actions of young hoons and the language directed at the police. The cops just have to grin and bare it

Give them more power not less Also in the same vein when I was a kid school teachers were treated with the utmost respect.  Fraid the world is going to hell in a hand basket.

Good post Tones. As a former member also, I concur with your sentiments.

The people who denigrate the Police are usually the ones that scream like stuck pigs when something happens to them. I had great pleasure in whacking several of those types during my service.

It's a pity some of these halfwits couldn't do a night or two in a patrol car to see what the boys put up with.

Like all threads, this one has wandered a bit. Easy to see why members of Parliament are continually jumping to their feet for the Speaker's rulings on personal misrepresentation and so on though, and unfair arguing tactics abound.biggrin

No problem, we are mere specks in a very big universe. smile

To return to the (easily forgotten wink) original post (OP), I did a quick search and found that there are recent Court rulings to do with a case that appeared in the papers.  There was some discussion by the caravan community too.  Some links are given below for those who are interested.

To summarise and I hope fairly from Victorian police commissioner, judges and some politicians' comments, while police have been given the power to stop and question drivers, the expectation is that they would not regard that as carte blanche invitation to stop anyone at any time, but would have good cause and apply good judgement in doing so.

Now as we all know, the legislature (States and Territories) has empowered police to conduct random alcohol and drug tests on drivers.  Presumably all would support that as I do, because affected drivers are a danger of the roads.

Some links,

later appeal,

I will leave it at that folks and wish all a great day.  Those who might be alone and could be suffering from illness, be aware we are all thinking of you.
