I think it's obvious that if your lap top is fully charged it must weigh more than if it had no charge because technically it is carrying more power but I'm not sure if penguins have knees

E=mc2 , where E is energy, m is mass, and c is the speed of light in a vacuum (fixed).

So from the equation the answer is yes.

Things a bit slow at Greens? Try this for a conversation starter,

"Women talk more - 20,000 words a day compared with 7,000 for the average man - and they talk twice as fast"

For most housebound men it simply means buying a longer garden hose.

What productive use/s could the information be put to though?

Assuming the battery is completely sealed (ie no vents), then there would be no weight gain. For every electron that flows into the battery, one electron flows out.

In any case the total mass of electrons transferred for each ampere-hour of charge is ...

(1 ampere hour) / (elementary charge) x (electron mass) = 20.5 micrograms

It is quite a conundrum, Billeeeeeee, now Ihave to decide if I power up the laptop before or after I take off on my adventure.
Life's questions are always there for contemplation. Certainly given me something to think about over the next couple of days!!!

Edit:

I realise it's only a bit of fun, but AFAICT the "energy-mass equivalence" weight gain for a fully charged house battery would be about 50 nanograms.

(12 volts x 100 ampere hours) / (the speed of light squared) = 48 nanograms

If you could convert 1 gram of mass completely into energy, you could power 3300 average NSW homes for a full year.

1 gram x (the speed of light squared) = 2.85 megawatt years

(1 gram x (the speed of light squared)) / (7500 kilowatt hours) = 3329

Way too hard to even think about here at the Garden of Eden, Uncle Fester. If I were you I would go have a nap instead.

just wondering if that is different for the different types of batteries..

ie Lead Acid compared to Lithium[LiFePO4y]

As Lithium suck up more power do they gain more weight..?? or is that more relevant to State of charge..?

Hmmm interesting question.  A bit like one I ponder sometimes, if a tanker truck has to deliver a load of Helium, does the truck get lighter the more Helium it takes aboard?
