RE: Tablets with gps and with out internet connection. CAN ANYONE ONE ADVISE WHAT BRAND AND WHICH APPS ARE SUITABLE THA

Hi About.

First of welcome, second I have very little knowledge on this subject but for free I can tell you what you spend is what you are going to receive in performance /user friendly.

Myself after a couple of cheaper tablets I now have, very happy with a Samsung 10.5 latest and greatest that was available.

It has GPS which I run a mapping system by. Osmand mapping.

Wifi is very user friendly with super great performance, very important for mobile usage.

With a few simple aps I regular use like FaceBook, Grey Nomads etc.

Has a very good camera not that I practise using it. Very good battery life about 8 hours

Mico sd card slot, we have a 32 gb card but can get 64 gb for extra storage by shopping about and you can hook up to another computer via a cable. I have about 10 gb of music on mine which I play though the car radio.  Bute.

There is another brand but it did not suit me but the owners will come back louder and more knowledgeable then me.

Best of luck with your shopping. Ralph

You need to make sure you get one with GPS as opposed to A-GPS (Assisted-GPS)

See Here for the differences.

Maybe Radar can tell you if his has A-GPS or GPS?

Troopy hi

Ours is GPS and other reason you need the off  internet mapping service, Osmand maps works for us here and over seas.

Once again lucky to have a younger person to set things up so as to get it right.

We use it as a portable navigation system. Ralph

 Hi Aus-Kiwì.

Yes I do have a Navman in the car, the thing is when you are travelling along and roads go pear shape with Osmand maps your able to expañd the area very quickly to find a route around, where the Navman looks for a detour for the most you will have know idea where it is taking you.

The 10.5 screen at our age is so much clearer then a fix screen in the centre of the car or worse 5 inch screen up on the windscreen very hard to check. If your sharing this with your partner she will tell you very quickly how she like using the Osmand system. Happy wife, happy life.

If any one can tell me of a better mapping system that you know of I am willing to learn more about it.

The app was sub $10. Ralph

If the tablet has a proper GPS (which the Samsung apparently has) and not a A-GPS only, and you have downloaded the maps and use a program like Oziexplorer, you won't use any data while travelling.

I have a Toshiba AT100 tablet 32gb Wifi, I don't need one with a mobile connection.

I purchased Navigon GPS app and I also have Navfree as the name says is free neither require a data connection.

My tablet is about 3 years old, I did have an iPad but I was disappointed with its lack of flexibility. The Toshiba has an SD card port along with Std and Mini USB ports also a HDMI port, on my recent trip to the NT I used it as my GPS and connected through the radio and listened to my music. I also used it at night to watch movies which were on a 100gb SS Drive connected using the USB port.

Hi about and welcome to the forum. I can't reall advise on a tablet, I have an iPad, am very happy with it. It does all I need and would not be without it. I have no experience with the others.

the best apps I can suggest are .wikicamps, to help you find the places to stay and the Sygic, GPS to help you get there. The two work well together and we find a large screen GPS to be a great help.

The two apps both work offline, so you don't need Internet while travelling.

althogh the iPad can accept A sim, we don't use it. Instead we share the data connection from the phone, that way we only need one prepaid phone connection.

hope this helps a little

Paul

THANKS EVERYONE
WE will take it all onboard. as stated in a reply our gps.s in the past like taking us their way and we still use paper maps for planing
Trying to get information from teck shops was in a word frustrating and of little value ,some didn't realize you loose mobile signal 10 k from a town and unless you have big t you dont even get single
it is a good game to play if your partner has different carrier who looses single first or how far up the hill you have to walk before you receive a single
Not a bad past time at free camps observing the exercise some receive chasing singles
regards ABOUT
