Waeco Low Voltage Cutoff device.

Anyone wanting one of the above can get them this weekend at SuperCheap for $24.76.  They chop the supply when battery gets down to 11.6Vdc. Will handle up to 5 amps which is 60 watts so most portable fridges will be under that.  Never seen them this cheap[ before. The description on the webpage is incorrect by the way so ignore that.

Hi Hako.

I very rarely think of these things like frig running battery low but this week have educated son home from overseas and has used my caravan tug to go up the beach when the weather turned to wet come home parked the tug in the garage 2 days latter the frig is still going but the battery is real low. "Well I was going to empty it".

just might take a trip to Super Cheap. Thank you Hako. Ralph

My Waeco frig has an inbuilt cut off unit that cuts out at 11.6 volts.

 HI BG

YES,

ALL Waecos have an inbuilt LOW VOLTAGE CUTOUT

Just need to ensure it IS set to the 11.8V cutout settingsmile

For those who do not have a main LOW VOLTAGE cutout ,it could be used as a master control for a slave higher rating relay

Although 11.6V is taking the battery a bit low for my likings[LA battery]

Yeah, that's what I was thinking too PeterQ, that 11.6VDC was a little low.

My Techniice has a 3 position selector to suit the most appropriate cut off/cut in scenarios. It works well.

I think you blokes are not taking voltage drop into account - you may find that 11.6 Vdc at the cutoff device is 11.8Vdc or more at the battery which is what the device is designed to protect.

 HI

Yes that is a very valid point & is the real problem with ANY low votage cutout located remote from the battery

It does not reflect the true SOC of the battery , being dependent on actual load  ,run length & cable size

Actually even 11.8V @ the battery is not good if it is a LA & you want long life

Of course those with Waeco Comprssor fridges do not need one  as such is built in

They are more for the thermoelectric type[ coolers] limited to 5A CONSTANT load

The 3-position slider switch on some Waeco PCBs functions as a RPM selector rather than a Battery Limit selector. In those cases the 12V cut-out/cut-in voltages are fixed at 9.6V / 10.9V.

The battery limits could be reconfigured by disconnecting the wire from the compressor's P terminal and then adding a suitable resistor between the P and C terminals. Alternatively, the resistor could be added to the PCB after removing the link between P and C on the PCB.

My understanding is, to get the best life out of an AGM battery, to not let it drop below 12 volts unloaded. An 11.6 volt cutout would allow the fridge to run the battery to this state.

Is my thinking correct???

Cheers Pete

HI Pete
Yes, that could be the case
Unfortunately it is not as simple as that
If the fridge is close to the battery, good wiring & no other loads on the battery the battery could end up dicharged more than 50%
Now that is not so bad with AGMs,they can tolerate a deeper discharge, but for flooded[ wet cell ]LAs could be bad news , especilly if that happens frequently.
That is why the only sensible place for a LOW Voltage cutout to be wired is at the battery terminals
At that point it does see the true battery voltage at all times

As Dorian has pointed out the internal Waeco cut out is set very low

IT is more to protect the Waeco fridge itself from under voltage
Unless there are high voltage drops on IT's circuit it is virtualy useless as a battery protecte

Even the cut in point is far too low

It will reset on what could be a near flat battery

It can be adjusted higher as Dorian has outlined[by inserting the approprate sized resistor in the panel .
Also as Dorian has pointed out, the slide switch is basically a speed control used for BOOST .normal as required , uses more energy on BOOST
