Actually I have seen one explode when a bloke at work was rummaging around in a junk draw full of odd connectors, nuts bolts and various metal part. The 9V battery finally got shorted out by something and went off with a bang while we were standing beside the bench checking out some drawings for the job we were working on.

Places like Battery World invite customers to dispose of their old batteries by depositing them in a bin at the counter. I've often wondered whether this practice poses a fire risk.

When our boys were young, they'd give our labrador a 9v battery to play with - she'd pick it up in her mouth and get 9v sting on her tongue, yelp, throw it in the air and catch it and repeat it over and over. Boys would be rolling on the ground in fits of laughter. Soon as the lab saw a 9v battery she'd get all excited so she certainly enjoyed it.
