yeah he was a gunner on hueys, remustered when he got back from nam. I met him again in 1989 at the Edinburgh air show, he was a woff then and didnt remember much about rookies, worried me a bit, I hope hes doing OK.
For the "other" "military" people, its OK we were the smart ones and sent our officers to stand/fly in front of the bullets, we stayed on safe bases with some warm stuff they called food (not sure thats an accurate description), and slept between sheets... BUT you are forgiven for being in the wrong service, us good hearted Ex-RAAF blokes have seen a few war movies and know a bit about what you did.. OH and a few ships at sea stuff..
All jokes aside folks, we will all have a special bond that will last till we go toes up. Its always a hoot to meet fellow service people in the RSL and the marches we attend, irrespective of the branch they served in. We have an ex merchant marine (British) in our sub branch ex WW2, hes 90 not out and has some great tin hats and sandbag stories to tell.
Take care and look after yourselves brothers.

Great topic Phil. My conscription number did not come out. Being home on the farm it was a blessing. If I had been called up I probably would have developed Diabetes then and possibly died in Vietnam..
I have a great respect for all who served our country.
Australian Army - RaSigs 1991 - 1997.
1RTB Basic Training 91-91
School of Signals 92-92
7Sig Regt Electronic Warfare 92-96
Oakey Base Comcen 97-97
Oct 97 Medical Discharge. 10/97.
Radio Operations and Communications Room Operations Operator.
Now please note by reading the dates above don't think I am young as I was just young enough to make it through before the cut off age for entry to the services.
As I was 34 years old when I went through Kapooka which is a lot older than most of the idiots they had in there at the time.
Anyway had a good time while I was in the service but there was times when I was glad that I am now out, and there are times that I wish I was still in.
As I have seen a few friends before my last heart attack while I was working in security at the local bases, and one of the guys was the 2IC of the Regt and
when I first me Phil he was only a Corporal, and the Adj was a digger like me.
Anyway that is my story of my service.
Cheers for now.
Barry.
RAAF Joined Feb69, RTU EDN, Cat2BT Wagga as MTFITT,,, did that for 10 years at 1SD, 1FTS, BSWLM and 481 SQN WLM.
1979 Commissioned into ATC (5 years too late IMHO due to pain the ar** EDO) Pt Cook, ESL, RIC, BUT and DAR.
Resigned in 1989 as they were gunna send me back to Sydney or Melbourne areas.
7 years active reserve 13 SQN DAR , converted to AIRDEF as we were training reserves to be ASOP's.
1996-99 full time back with ATC at DAR (they were short of ATC's and rang me and offered 1 year, said make it 3 and they couldn't say yes quick enough), so I was fortunate enough to top up DFRDB ( I was smart enough NOT to convert to the new one) and the young guys called me a dinosaur, but I laughed all the way with DFRDB.
1999 made the break, they took my RAAF base pass to allow me onto base so that was it for me.
Assist Sec Brighton RSL in SA and on many RAAF Facebook sites and caught up with guys I haven't seen or heard of from 69 and early 70's.
RAAF was absolutely a great life, one big family in most of my time.
Cheers Baz

It was amazing the amount of veterans and ex service that ended up in the Reserves when I was in - there were a lot of ex Vietnam, couple of Malaya ,couple of Korea , some various little actions and other nasty places (eg Aden and Northern Ireland), and some in things "that didn't happen" and one of the cooks jumped at Arnhem. The stories told in the mess were ... interesting to say the least. But they were the guys that trained us.
My dad was ARES 40+ years(RAEME) Maternal Grandfather won MM in Syria and was in Borneo (RAE) Father in law was in Militia (light horse) pre WW2 and ended up in New Guinea.
I am surprised that there is not more ex army and Navy forming up in here.
