"I believe that many others leave for an altogether different reason. Unfortunately, some of the "STARS" of the Forum think they are duty bound to clog up the pages here with every tiny bit of useless information about their little adventures in paradise. Here's a bit of news for you, most of the rest of us aren't that interested if you attended a happy hour and someone brought a cake along!!!

If any members feel they must tell their immediate friends, who do happen to care, about their little escapades, then by all means do so via PMs or a link to your Facebook page. Don't bore the majority of us with irrelevant stuff about the minutia of your life."

I have since December 2010 posted the happenings in my life as a Grey Nomad and I must admit that whilst travelling there was more interest than whilst camped at Greens Lake. I was of the opinion that the majority of members from the forum found these posts of interest, indeed some have said inspirational. I have continued these posts as payback for the help offered to me by members at the beginning of my adventures. It would be easier to quietly stop posting and become a lurker but never a negative poster.

So I have decided to put up a poll and if the majority regard my posts as irrelevant I will discontinue posting. If the majority consider the posts worthwhile then the poster whose opinion stands above should consider carefully before making negative comments in the future.        John

John, I am not amongst the people who post every detail of life, but I do read most of what is posted in certain categories. And yes I think some of the detail may be a little bit to much if it is in the wrong place.

I generally read almost everything in general (I avoid some people, rather than topics). And in general the level of trivia is not an issue.

I read techies, selectively by topic. Some Topics I have no knowledge, and or interest.

I read Greens, and in this case I enjoy the trivia, because I think it gives me a feel for what is going on, and just makes me wish i was there.

I read I digress, again the trivia here is fine, it is part of what the category is meant for.

The last category i read is Show Us Your Tug, just to see what people are up to.

I used to post a lot more, but then I felt i was bullying people with the "no it all" position I was taking on a few topics, so now I am a lot more selective.

Like everyone I will go through waves on the forum.

There are certain members here that I always read what they say and some others that I never read.

I only read the ones I find interesting of course. Everybody is different and we have different interests and personalities.

I reckon the forum caters for most people and comes up with a pretty good cross section of subjects.

If I didn't read your posts John, I wouldn't be replying. No, I do not think your contributions are boring. Keep doing what you have been doing please.smilesmile

Hi John,

I voted NO.

I love your posts and I always read them. They are really helpful and informative...usually with great photos as well.

I rarely read the posts of the person you quoted...and that will now become never read them!

Have a great Christmas and New Year...and please keep on posting.

I'm sure he wasn't referring to you at all John.

Have noticed the Wikicamps forum has been closed down from what seems to be a threat of some legal action.
I very rarely post these days, for personal reasons but still enjoy reading the good posts including yours John.

John I look forward to your posts and thank you for your generosity. I understand it can be a burden in time and bandwidth to write them.

As Judie and I wind down for retirements your posts among many others help keep the dream alive for us.

Many thanks young man.

Gday...

Plendo has written exactly what I would have written if he hadn't beaten me to it. He sums up how I use, and feel about, the forum.

I haven't bothered to vote, John, that is because as I have said to you face-to-face there are so many people on this forum with such a wide variety of experience - ranging from none ... very little ... to heaps. Some of these people NEED the "observations" of the journeys you (and many others) put on the forum - they gain not only knowledge of this wide, brown, endless, rewarding, interesting land but also gain confidence that they too can shake off the shackles of "normal life" and stretch their horizons.

Ultimately, to again quote Plendo above, "I avoid some people, rather than topics" ... but overall there is so much, almost too much, information and personality to keep me very interested.

Maybe I too, am one of those who post drivel and irrelevant minutia ... c'est la vie. Which is wot Ned Kelly wooda sed if he new flash lingo like French

Cheers - John

Hi John.
I think your posts and pictures are absolutely wonderful. Your posts are the first ones I look for and read before I look at any of the others. They do not bore me at all. It makes me wish i could convince hubby into retiring a bit sooner. Keep it up, I would be very disappointed if you disappeared into the sunset at Greens.
Cheers, Dini

Am not sure if I lurk or just pass thru occasionally, and offer a comment now and again.

But have I missed something?  What is this post meaning?  Guess I must have been out in the 'play ground' and missed something.

Did meet up with John yonks ago after reading(following) his blog, and still when I remember how to Log On I will continue to read again.

Never know how when or if, but am sure we'll bump into each other again.

CYA,  and go with the flow, make ripples and not waves...

John, keep posting. This seems to be one of those posts that are out to cause trouble again. A sad person really.

As I have told you personally many times, you were my inspiration, from the beginning and continue to be.

Keep posting, I must admit that I have stopped posting as much as I figured that people are really not interested and then I will receive a PM asking me to post so who knows.

I am guessing that there are some that are jealous of the lifestyle that is lead by some of us. As I said who knows.

Don't let them get you down.

Don't you dare stop posting John.  I don't think you realise just how much pleasure and encouragement your posts give people.    In my opinion, whatever moron wrote the above, doesn't belong here.

Whoever you are, we don't have STARS here.  Just friends, who either have, or have not yet, met.  If you want to be a Star, I suggest you go elsewhere.

Cheers,

Gday...

As always there are MANY readers of topics ... this one has attracted 346 readers - 18 replies .. and 49 votes.

The post that prompted this poll, (a poll which really is unnecessary John - because the 'true GN forumites know why they read and/or participate on the forum), is the one that is simply a burr in the blanket of a donkey.

Just get on with what ya do well and stuff the one-of attempts of the 2% who only want to denigrate what the other 98% find interesting.

Dear John, Your posts are one of the major reasons I even come here! You have inspired me in ways you will never know. In fact I have bookmarked and used your posts on my travels. I have actively used your blog as a guide. I have found through following in your footsteps that sometimes I disagree with you as I find some places you have recommended not to my liking but that does not mean I value your posts any less. It just means that we are different. Please do not stop posting, I would be lost without your roadmap. As far as what people eat and share well I think that, that is ALL relevant. There are sites around about just that: what to eat on the road. I am one of your Ghost readers and enjoy every post. Sorry if I dont comment on your posts but be assured they are valued and valuable. Thank you for the time and effort you put into EVERY post!

Im a bit like cooee and generally just look and sometimes make a post. It will take some time for the tone of the forum to settle. That being said Im not aware that anyone has posted irrelevant stuff, yes some, like me, tend to wobble on a bit but thats what makes this an interesting place to be.

I have the greatest respect for all those who choose to inhabit this space and use it properly. Its still got to be based on respect and the joy of caravaning.

Anyway enough of me, I will sit back and enjoy the forum

John I too have enjoyed your posts and suggest the small minded twit who made the negative comments needs to have a rethink about what mates and friends are all about because the vast majority of us here at the Grey Nomads are mates.

If you are not interested in certain topics or posts just move on to something you are interested in and please do not post negative comments about other members or their posts

The posts that attract my interest are those that provide information such as tips, how-tos, and locations of caravan parks and freecamps. I don't pay too much attention to "lifestyle" related threads. Personally, I have no interest in happy hour or "cones". You get that way when you've had to live next door to a drug user and alcoholic for several years. My other property used to be invaded on weekends by the local aboriginals who would leave behind their rubbish and bongs.

But each to his or her own ...

John you hang in here my friend and all strength to you.. aussietraveller has had a very mild dig at the person who criticised you and at the risk of incurring the wrath of our moderators I will go one step further. The person who had the shot at you has contributed little of substance to this forum. He has, unlike yourself, never posted entertaining and genuinely interesting material. I will strongly suggest to this person that unless you have something positive to contribute to this form find somewhere else to wallow in your apathy and narrow minded opinions. Cheers..

There's another John who had something interesting to say about "ratings". I worked at 2UE when John Laws came back to the office after a long lunch on ratings day. He was #1 again. He sat on a desk and said, "80% of people in Sydney hate me." Hehe. John had learned a long time ago in the radio biz that those who don't like you don't matter. It's the people who do who matter.

In any case, if someone is posting boring or irrelevant stuff, it'll show up on the number of views/readers. From what I've seen of John's posts, they always have a healthy count. As to the bloke who posted the "minutia" comment, I hope he doesn't think he's representing the opinion of the majority of GNs.
