What are the benefits to registering as a 'Traveller' when applying for VAST Satellite Service?

I'm considering purchasing a RV satellite TV system on VAST at this weekend's Bendigo Caravan and Motor Home Leisurefest.

I've researched the various bits I need....and understand I could be looking at about $500+?........Portable Dish 85cm? set up....

I see that it is recommended in other areas here that one should register VAST as a Traveller and I understand it is 'good' for 6 months and you get wiped if you don't renew beforehand... 

My question is if I already have an Eaglehawk Vic address <not a Melbourne address> what are the benefits if I register as a Traveller?

My home base is Port Lincoln S.A. however we travel reasonably extensively throughout Victoria at this stage with occasional trip to W.A.....does registering as a Traveller allow me to gain access to VAST when I enter S.A. and W.A.?......will living in Eaglehawk "qualify" me to obtain access to VAST in either case?....don't know how it all works really, however I wish to be prepared for the friendly 'snake oil' salesmen I will no doubt encounter at the Leisurefest..meaning they all seem to have similar set ups so it will really be about the service/knowledge/price I'm offered by way of inducement to do something at the Fair rather than go down the Ebay track at this stage.

Any recommendations greatly received....there may be other GNs with similar questions as well......Many thanks in advance...Hoo Roo

Traveller registration is the way to go IMHO and is simple. I had to renew mine this week, took me 2 minutes online and is current to May15 ie 6 monthly.

If you go to WA you need to tell em to change over,  otherwise get eastern states and territories first is my suggestion .

I just make a quick phone call every time we cross into a new state, and I get their tv shows in their time.

you may not qualify for VAST access at your home address so the only way to be authorised is to register as a traveller. You can renew the registration up to a maximum of 4 weeks Prior to expiry and this is highly recommended because if you allow it to expire you need to wait for the staff at the office to reassess and re-authorise your card.

As others have said, If you live in an area that has good TV reception you will have to register as a traveller. I am on the traveller system.  Not long back from a trip around Australia, and didn`t change off the QLD receiption as we wanted to get Qld news. Renewing  every 6 months is no problem, and it is free. Get at least an 80 cm disk, as the smaller ones are not much good in central and western Australia.

Hi there Goldetectornomad, if you get a chance call Access Antenas over here in the west, excellent service and guidance for your initial setup, their Satking boxes were $235, 85cm dish $85, sat finder about $30, LNB $25, all you need plus a couple tv cables, I would give itechworld a very big miss, complete rsoles on the phone when I was looking to purchase and they will try to palm you off to an inferior set top box for more than the Satking which they always advertise, not just me, but a friend also copped the same, when he tried to insist on the satking they just hung up on him.

Reconsider the size of the dish if you intend travelling north west Aus. Lots of people in broome had big problems with small dish. Paid 550 for the lot in Broome so you shouldn't pay more than that

also agree with jon, most people I have come across with problems have itech

Many thanks for all your informative replys'....I now have a better handle on the 'Traveller' benefits...way to go for me.....
Jon 641, I have contacted Access Antennas' in the West, as you suggested and told them they come recommended......I am seeking total price with the additional 12v cable, for their complete 'Minimax' System delivered to Eaglehawk/Bendigo ......told them I am "dinkum" so hopefully they will respond with an offer that compels me to buy now, and with their honest recommendations... rather than purchase at the Leisurefest tomorrow.....

Re your Sat setup, we use a satfinder from Satplus, this unit saves time on setup and only locks onto the C1 Sat. cost $99. Satplus also sells the complete kits including this meter.

Complete kits with the $99 meter are $450 and $550.

Like you we also travel up North of WA in the winter.

This organisation are good people to deal with.
