"In 2010, the Australian Government collected close to $8.6 billion from alcohol taxation."

Technically, lighting a cigarette can be prosecuted as lighting a fire in the open when we have total fire bans. It just happens that the police turn a blind eye toward the transgressor.

Maybe we should ban smoking and the Gov. loose billions in tax......you non smokers can pick up the tab, because the Gov. will get the tax another way.

I agree that it's hypocritical for the government to be profiting from people's vices/addictions, but are smokers really paying their way?

How much does tobacco related lung cancer, emphysema, cardiovascular disease, and cancer of the bladder, esophagus, larynx, lung, mouth, and throat cost the taxpayer compared to the revenue collected from tobacco excise?

That was the original excuse given for imposing such a high tax on tobacco products. In fact I read somewhere that this amount still doesn't cover the costs, not just for hospitals and healthcare, but also for time off work, loss of earnings etc

According to Alan Jones (love him or hate him) the radio jocky NSW, the taxes on tobacco collected in NSW alone would pay for the entire NSW health system and still leave millions over. Remember there are billions in taxes collected Ozzy  wide on ciggies. Where does it go, not into cancer research etc. does it?

Back to National Parks, just been reading that in the USA they are starting to ban motorised Skimobiles in National Parks, (battery driven only) Jelly Stone being the first. So ....4x4bies and trail bikers watch out. National Parks are for the people, not a select few. We dog owners have been putting up with discrimination in Parks for yonks.

The auzzie bush needs to burn that is how it has been for eons the fire rejuvenates the bush, lightning starts more fires than cigarette butts do. Broken glass bottles are another big reason for fires.

A mate of mine lives on a dirt road right next to a national park so if he lights up in his car on the road were is the start and finish of the park, his property is on the left side of the road heading west the park is on the right, there are no fences so my question is .

at what point are you in the park Is it half way across the road or if you pull over on the park side of the road And have a ciggy are you in the park or not.

I am a Non- Smoker but I believe this law was thought up by some shinny ass who is trying to justify there job, so they sit around thinking up ways to piss off the public.

Talk about a Nanny State. How the hell are they going to police it If you are on your own in a park having a ciggy , and you hear a car coming just but out and put the smokes away the rangers have no right to search your property and even if they do find some smokes they need to prove that you were smoking them.

I don't give a toss if some one smokes or not at this point in time they are a leagle item The government makes a $hit load of money from them, as long as their ciggy smoke dose not make me or anyone else suffer then they should be alowed to smoke  it is suppose to be a free country but that seams to be a past dream more and more now.

I would be happy to fine anyone who drops the butts on the ground in a park and make it a big fine maybe 2-3 grand that will stop the litter bugs that is what pisses me of the most is the litter left around and not just ciggy butts

Cheers

The HAts

So what has domestic violence, lung cancer and drunkenness got to do with protecting our national parks? Why all the white noise on the thread?

This will certainly become a major problem for Sparks and wildfires formally known as parks and wildlife as they rely heavily on volunteer fire fighters in all states to help with hazard reductions and controlling wild fires.

I know exactly what the volunteers will say when told they can't have a smoke in the park when working with National Parks they will give the one finger salute and carry on with controlling the fire.

Most fires in national parks are caused by lightening not cigarettes and the most common cause of people lit fires in NationalParks are done with the BBQ fire starters dropped beside a track or lobbed into the bush from a lookout.

Let's not get carried away next they will be saying you can only use your National Parks Pass in the State where you purchased it.
