That is a very tall request to come up with a reasonable easy by pass of Sydney from Kiama.
For you to leave the coast at Kiama you will need to climb a mountain range which are all scenic.
I think you better come back with more information as to what you are trying to do as to avoid Sydney to go north could be worse then driving though the small amount of suburban driving as there is lot of toll ways in there that make the trip easy.
Take the Highway towards Wollongong keeping on 88 to the Hume Highway 31 follow this to Carsula follow the M7 tollway though to Beecroft where it turns into the M2 where you will turn to go N7 Pennant Hills Road to Hornsby and all points north.
Hope this helps Ralph.
Ps I did this way 4 times this year with the car and caravan it is very good, take your time and enjoy.
Hi Doc, we are in the Coffs Harbour area now, having travelled from the south coast two weeks ago, we find getting through Sydney via the Picton, Hume Highway, M7, then the dreaded Pennant Hills Rd (I think it is only about 15klms of this road)then on to the expressway to Newcastle is best for us, easier on a Sunday morning, leave the south coast very early and the trip seems easier,
just our thoughts anyrate, best wishes for a good safe trip. Cheers Capricorn
We have pulled our 21'6" thru Sydney traffic many times, even in the wet, without difficulty.
In fact I find Sydney drivers far more courteous than my home town Brisbane drivers. As long as I indicate well beforehand, they invariably make way for me.
I just test my brakes & mirrors beforehand & drive conservatively/defensively.
Only once did I have to act quickly when a bus did something stupid in front of me going downhill in the wet.
I also ensure that I am very familiar with the route both on the GPS & hard copy map (with a few written notes) before starting. Maybe a tad over prepared but it enhances my confidence & I never get lost.
SWMBO calls out the way points as we go ... which may be the only flaw in my plan!
As was suggested previously passing thru early Sunday morning is a good tactic.
Perhaps I was sharing the road with all those good people coming or going from Church.

Your Ford towing your van is a very capable set up, there would not be to many places where you would have second thoughts about going.
Enjoy your journey to the north coast and be adventurous and get off the 4 lanes try some of the old roads and look at the great beaches as you go up north. Ralph.

hi doc you wont have any problems or i may be too late talking to you , hope you didnt , we just did it a few days ago , with a toyota troopy and a big 3t van did it in 3rd gear some of the way , dont be too scared of sydney , easy follow the signs get onto the pacific hwy and your on your way , just take your time , no point rushing or getting flustered in the traffic dosent make it go any quicker , believe me , worked in sydney just finished driving trucks and earth moving machinery ,
happy travels
Over the mountains I prefer Bells line Rd, through Mudgee then through Hunter Valley makes a nice easy drive.. Depending how long you visit the wineries on the way through ?
You will have no issues the Terri ...
