Hi GG, I have a in-line charcoal water filter and when not in use I give it a good shake the wrap in two layers of plastic film wrap and put in bottom of fridge.

Can't dry mine so leave wet. No problems in 7 years and we use filters when filling from non potable water before it goes into tanks and activated carbon for drinking water as we use it.

I only use those 'on tap' things that are supposed to last for 3 months. I use the cheaper ones that cost around $8 for a cartridge so replacing them for each trip is not a significant cost.
Of course they are probably not as effective as the large 'more sophisticated' ones but then we only use CP water that is probably OK anyway.
We are not picky about the water that we drink, except when overseas in places like China where we use the hotel bottled water.
