Filling Flushwater Tank on Thetford Toilet

Heya all,  Now I know I'm really new to all this (3 weeks exactly on the road) but for the life of me I can't work out how to refill the flushwater tank on the loo.  Yes, I've read the manual.  I'm supposed to put the pink stuff in the top of the flushwater pipe, check done that, but when I put water in all that happens is that the pipe fills with water but the water level on the tank stays the same.  How can I get water into the tank?

Use a bucket to fill and only pour it in slowly, the Pipe you are pouring into is like a "P" trap it should fill ok as it does if you have the clear glass tube you will see the water rising in the tube.

Hi Jim, thanks for your response.  So I need to turn the P tube upside down and empty it out and then fill slowly?  Do I have to wait until the tank is completely empty or can I 'top it up'?

Do not use that pink stuff in your flush tank. it does nothing but add a nice smell. It also, after time forms black globules in the flush water and eventually will block up your flush pump. This will result in the requirement for replacement and it is not cheap. You don't put perfume in the cistern in your toilet at home so why do it now???

Is that right, Nudenut?  Thanks for the tip.  That'll save some money.  Also, do I need to use the special Thetford toilet paper or is good old Quilton ok?

Use 2 ply paper and all should be OK.

I've found that it seems to take endless water and doesn't look like it's filling, the level doesn't change. But it is filling and it takes a while for the level to change. I either use a bucket or hose on really slow flow to fill. I agree with nude nut, I no longer use the pink stuff, sometimes I put a drop or 2 of eucalyptus oil in but personally I don't think anything really is needed. Each to their own.

We put the blue detergent in the drop tank but nothing in the fresh water tank, out loo has a knob on the top to refill through.

It is generally accepted that the best treatment for the bottom tank is sodium percarbonate (generic, cheap nappy soaker). We use it at the rate of 1 teaspoonful per #2 use.

This stuff is cheap and is totally "green"(it can be safely emptied into septic tanks), unlike some chemical treatments still on the market. Using more than this does NOT do a better job.
The best for the top tank is absolutely NOTHING.

The flushing tank (top) can also be filled from the inside by pulling out the toilet roll holder.
We do this in the MH we are using in Europe by running the shower into it while the hot water comes through (the HWS is some distance away from the loo and this saves wasting the water).

Cheers,
Peter

Are you filling through the pump plunger or the vent, or am I talking about a totally different system? Our portable system has to be filled via the air vent, and we also only use woolworths home brand nappy cleaner, 360 gm sodium percarbonate /kg, better than anything else, no need for any other smelly stuff.

Thanks so much for the advice. I shall get the nappy soaker in future, Peter and Margaret. Different system Jon641 but thanks for your response.
