Carrying cooking oil.

Just back from another trip and again we found the peanut oil kept in it's original 750ml plastic container tightly sealed, stored upright and wrapped in a few layers of paper towelling has mananged to leak up past the seal and saturate the towelling and then leaked to items stored nearby. We have tried all types of containers - metal, glass, screwtop etc but that damn oil just creeps up, up and away. We store it with other food items on the floor and over the van axle to reduce movement to no avail. The roads we travel are not the best as we avoid highways. We use peanut oil only because it's the flavour of the day but have had problems with all oils. Solidified oils don't suit Joys needs as she uses oil for frying plus as an ingredient.

So, has anyone solved this problem?.....

Thanks.

Hey Denis, I use the blended oil and had no problems.
I also use a tomato sauce plastic squeeze bottle it seals good too. Cheers Sarg.

Hi Denis & Joy, When we had an AVan (Cruiseliner) we found that if we bought the smallest bottle of oil (in a glass bottle), we could put it into a plastic container with the lid off, in the narrow cupboard just to the right of the door as you climb in. Never had a problem. We had other bottles of stuff packed in tight in the same container, with a bit of that rubberized non slip matting around them. Not sure about my theory, but I think that the back of the van is going to be the most bumpy, followed by the area over the wheels, with the front of the van the least likely to be troubled by bumps. ie. closest to the hitch. What do you think?  Hey Sarg,  we are going to pinch the sauce bottle idea for sure.  Great idea!

Yes we use olive oil too, in a glass bottle. I was a bit concerned about the glass, although its quite heavy, and put a wine-bottle cover on it. This made it a nice tight fit in the "pantry" and no worries. There's a bit of oil on the cover now but that's most likely because I dribbled it when pouring. Yes the pantry is in the front of the van.

That might be the answer - sauce bottles, however don't you find the oil creeps out of the bottle?
Actually I was just thinking about it and the way carry it now (and leaks) is possibly due to the very flexible tall 750ml bottle it comes in - this would get squeezed and pushed/pulled/pummeled by bottles/tins nearby plus expansion/contraction with temperature changes so maybe a glass one?
At home we have 2...one with olive and the other peanut - they are glass with the push in spout/pourer and they both suffer from "creep" so much so that we sit them in saucers.
This time when we got home we had to wash all the jars and tins that were in the same container as the oil due to leakage.
Thanks for the tips so far.

I buy my cooking oil (rice bran oil - but that's a personal choice) in 4 litre can & that has never leaked or spilt while travelling

then there is maple syrup. What a horrible hard mess it makes when that bottle falls over and leaks. Still havent worked out how to get it off the shelf - is rock hard!

I use olive oil in a glass bottle with screwtop lid. No leaks. Ditto sesame oil. I have one of those cardboard 6 wine bottle carriers that you get from bottle shops. Carry the oils, soy sauce, vinegar, tomato sauce container etc packed in that to minimize movement, with some non slip matting between bottles.

I always keep my oil bottle wrapped in a few layers of paper towel secured with a rubber band - catches any drips and easy to change

We also take our oil in a glass bottle with no leaks to date. However we do put it inside an old stubby cooler to stop it hitting other things in the pantry. We also use a tall container to put our cartons of UHT milk in (1 in each container) to stop them from rubbing, causing a leak and going all over other stuff. So far working a treat.

We carry Olive Oil in a 4L tin, also various other oil in 1L bottles(glass) without a problem.

Having said that, you said you carry it on the floor over the axles, this would be the roughest place IMHO.  The softest ride in your van would be in the front boot, softer still in the boot of your car.

Similar, in a small boat, the softest ride is as far to the rear as you can sit.

Cheers Neil
