We have recently purchased a Toyota Coaster motorhome, not to go around Australia but to be able to take off as we wish.  Neither of us has had a caravan etc before so we are learning big time. We have been down to Sydney for a few days & away overnight another time.  This has shown up some of our needs etc.

One thing we are having problems with is the mixture for our stove.  The Toyota was converted when we purchased it & there was fuel in the stove which smelled like methylated spirits.  We tried asking in a camping shop but the girl just said that is smelled like methylated spirits.

So we bought methylated spirits but it burns dirtily making our pans all sooty.  The fuel which was in it when we bought the vehicle burnt very cleanly.  Despite asking in various camping places no one seems to know anything.  I realize it must be the additive which makes the difference but what do we look for etc.  Just to know what brand would really be a help. I'm sure we can't be the only people with the problem.

Thanks

How,

Welcome to the gang India, enjoy here and out in the playground.

It sounds like a spirit stove for sure but can't help with what or where to get the correct spirit's sorry. Maybe google spirit stove fuel and see if he can help. "Yeoeleven" John, a member in Solo (mainly) section of the forum may be able to help. You could also go into the techies section and ask there as well.

 Hi India..

Does the stove have a trough around the burner ring,    If so...pour a small amount of metholated spirits into the trough and lite....dont overfill but start with a small amount, this should heat the burner and vapurize any metholated spirits later introduced.   As it is about to go out....slowly turn the knob and you should be left with a clean blue flame.    If this fails to occur, and you get more metho into the ring, repeat the proceedure, but add a little more metho into the ring. Wait until the flame has estinguished.   DO NOT FILL TO THE BRIM AS YOU WILL GET A LARGE FLAME.

Cheers

George & Fatdog

These fuel stoves are sometimes used by sailors on yachts, because of the fuel they level out, and the fuel doesn't spill.

Thank you all for your lovely welcomes & the great advice that has been given regarding the stove.  I have given the info to the other half so we shall see what happens.

I hope that I will be able to contribute to this website.

Thank you again.
