For caravans of 2T+, your local service mechanic who has previously inspected and approved your caravan for registration can NO LONGER inspect and approve your caravan registration. your caravan can only be inspected by an approved heavy vehicle inspector.
My local mechanic has approval for vehicles up to 3T and he was not aware of the changes, he has since spoke to the RMS and has confirmed he can no longer approve caravans for registrations, in fact he has already referred owners on to a heavy vehicle inspector.
This has been in place for quite some time now and is not new.
A caravan/trailer with an ATM of MORE than 2000kg AND is fitted with a breakaway system MUST be inspected by an authorised heavy vehicle inspection station.
This is the case in NSW I have no info for other states.

The situation actually is caravans over 2 tonnes GTM must be fitted with be fitted with breakaway brake systems (not ATM.) However you will find some manufacturers producing vans under 2 t GTM are fitting their vans with breakaway controllers. These vans must also be inspected by heavy vehicle inspectors.
