Another Aussie Icon Closing Down

As much as we often like to spruik about how Aussie all to often this doesn't translate into action and I include myself in that. That lack of action is resulting in another Aussie business closing down and whether we foster enough long term support to keep the place viable and running is the question.

D and D, I do buy Dick Smith's products...when I can find them!

Where I live, I have a choice between a not overly large IGA where I can usually find some of his products and an average size Woolworths where the D S lines that they do stock are so well hidden that you almost need to send out a search party to find them.

I buy the D S peanut butter, tomato sauce, beetroot, fruit spreads, bush foods (great sprinkled on Greek yoghurt and berries for breakfast). I know that there are more products but these are the only ones that I've been able to locate.

Far be it from me to suggest that the supermarkets make more money from cheap imports and therefore deliberately place the Dick Smith items that they do carry in less accessible spots. I wouldn't be that cynical.....hmmm.....just saying.....

We buy Dick Smith products but also note that they are usually around 20% dearer than similar products which also are made in Australia by overseas owned companies.
Why is this so when labour, raw product and distribution costs should be identical? Is the selling price set by the end seller?

I would assume that DS turn over and therefore buying power of the raw products would be a lot more.

The big manufacturers really screw their suppliers to the wall and also the big stores then screw the manufacturers so it is a continouos circle that DS perhaps would not, or did not have the resources to play the game.

Many times the specials the big stores have the suppliers cover the loss not the store, this is part of the game for shelve space and premium siting on those shelves.

I try and buy Australian at all times but I don't consume sugar so most of his products are not on my buying list.

Regards
Brian

This is a food division run by Dick Smith himself. Not to be confused with Dick Smith Electronic stores which he sold off to Woolworths some years back. Woolworths have since sold the Company on.

Re the sale of Dick Smith - have noticed his trademark image has disappeared.
