Vans with a low ball weight but large tare

Been at the caravan show today looking for a van we have a 2013 Pajero that can tow up to 3 T as long as the ball weight is under 180. There are a lot out there that have ball weight of around 130 but tare of 2200  which works in with the correct weights for the Paj. It doesn't come anywhere near the rule of 8-14%  of tare though  How does this work and is it best to avoid this and try and keep under the 2100 tare instead if going for the smaller ball weight

interestingly nobody asked what we were towing with today

You would be better reposting in techies corner.
Im surprised at the low ball weight, but caravans today have all the storage up the front. It looks good... But... And most folk store stacks in the back of the 4wd too.
And no one will ever ask you what your tow is, until I say "I can't buy this van cos I can only tow 2.5 ton" then they change tack.
Good luck, repost in techies, or use the search engine. You will get heaps of info ;)
