Well folks we have arrived home after our little jaunt out west and for me Jugiong was the best. Right on the river it has a dump point, toilets and the motel up the road serves nice cold beer and cooks great meals. There is also a café open from Wednesday to Monday which also serves great coffee and food. The Police remembrance service was unbelievable for such a small place I was one of only 12 people who attended. The grounds also supply fire buckets and you can either buy wood at the servo or get your own from a great pushed up pile of timber. Another place we visited was Mt Oriel Homestead, called Iandra Castle. Iandra Castle was built in 1880 just out of Young NSW and is only open six times a year and luckily for us it was open whilst we where in the area. Gary Kelly don't know if you know of this place?? Anyway a couple of pics for you all to look at.
Totally agree with your comments. We have stopped several times at Jugiong the last being for 4 days in April. There are several taps located around the site and the water is excellent. Yes the cafe for coffee and if you are there on the weekend the Pub for pizza. My understanding is that the business community keep the toilet block maintained and has been spotless when we have been there. The cafe (The Long Track Pantry) is based on a farm kitchen idea and is owned and run by country people. They have produced a cook book called the 'farm cafe' and truly country farm cooking. We use the recipes on a weekly basis both at home and in the caravan.
Sounds awesome Copper1. I was in Young during winter and didn't venture out sightseeing. The station had a satellite studio at Cowra but I didn't go there either, and also was too dumb to know about the Japanese prisoner camp, etc. I left Young after only 3 months and worked in Lismore for the next 2 years. Anyway, next time I'm down in cherry country I'll be sure to have a good look around.
Thank you for tip off we will make use of Jugiong on our way south in the coming week, I like visiting towns that were once on the highways where as long distant transport driver would charge though with never enough time to scratch one self.
I mostly remember that very steep hill going south as you left the township in winter around midnight or so it would ice up and you would loose traction mainly in the outside lane and the need for a tow. This event used too happen in the late seventies, something in the tar, don,'t recall it happening in the eighties.
In those days it had 2 really good truck stops, the food was good eating. Don't the memories come flooding back.
We did stop at Gunning earlier in the year at the free stop but to me it was only good for overnighter, this time I will go that bit further.
We are going to have a night or two there in a couple weeks. Heard so much about it and we have driven past too many times. This time I have told my husband we are definately going to stop instead of heading further down to Albury.
