Oh dear ... Camps 3 - I guess that is now showing its age (ain't we all )

However, perhaps it worth buying Camps 7 as it is about five months before Camps 8 will be released (I think about Feb 2015).

You can get updates to Camps 7 on the Camps Australia website (http://www.campsaustraliawide.com/update-service/)

That will tide you over until Feb 2015 - or even later should you wait.

A lot of the camp location numbers have been changed (even with Camps 6 to Camps 7) and as you rightly pointed out many changes have occurred both closed and new ones. So either wait until Feb 15 for Camps 8 or get Camps 7 and do your updates.

A lot of GN's use Wikicamps app (under $5 to get online) but you need a more recent mobile with screen for that or tablet/Windows 8/Apple etc.

We use Wikicamps combined with Camps 7, works well for us.

Will we buy Camps 8? probably not, Wikicamps has it pretty well covered at a fraction of the price. smile

Hi Santa.

I recently downloaded the wikicamps to my phone and trialled it over the last 2 weeks whilst on the road.

As I entered Inverell looking for a caravan park, wiki was sending me 30 - 59 klms out of town. I found 3-4 others, not listed on wiki, right in town.

As for helpful information, it was unable, at either Lithgow, Bathurst, Orange, Walgett or Lightning Ridge to assist with prices, comments.

I have now let my trial expire and will now most likely look to Camps 7 or 8.

KB, I have had wiki camps app on my iPad for about a year. I think it's fairly good BUT you have to sort the wheat from the chaff re comments on caravan parks or camp sites. I have checked the prices,comments etc for the sites you listed and yes they are there. Maybe the trial app would not allow you to see them all. Camps book is still the bible.

Certainly not our experience Keiron, we recently traveled from Adelaide through NSW and Qld, as far North as Cloncurry and back to Adelaide, all up 7000 km, and found Wikicamps invaluable, we free camped the whole way, I did say we use it in conjunction with Camp 7.

Did you also download the data for the states you visited which enables you to use the app offline?

Not sure why you would need to trial an app that only costs $7.50.

As far as Camp 7 being the bible, nope! we've found plenty of misinformation and mistakes in it, as I said use them together. wink

We have just returned from a four month trip and used wikicamps the majority of the time, the advantage I found was the regular updates provided by other people and I also fount the prices quoted to be accurate I also liked the photos that were available with most sites whereas most of the info in other styles of books is at least 12 months old by the time it goes through the printers and reaches the shops.
We also made use of the information that is readily available in Tourist Information Centers.

Because there are a lot of cr*p apps around and some won't work on certain platforms.... furious

I use Camps 7 and Wiki Camps. Works well for me.

Keep in mind that Wiki is only as good as WE make it. Make sure you add sites, comments and prices as you go.

I reported a double up of a site a while back and they sorted that out after first checking.

Like Glenelg, I too believe Camps 8 is due out early next year, so if I were you I would hold off if you can to get the updated issue.

I mostly use Wikicamps these days but sometimes check my Camps 7 for any corrections and comparisons.
It is up to us to add to any sites on Wikicamps, which I do often. Be aware though that not everybody gets it right, sometimes you may have to correct their info or notify Wikicamps to do alterations.

Wikicamps for me too!

used it for 8 weeks on major trip , used Camps seven for roads along with Gps. I like a Map I can touch and write on to plan my day / trip, but won't be paying or Camps 8 , Wiki is more upto date.

as someone else said its important to download information to be available offline, thousands of comments, prices and photos and this information is growing as we contribute.

Both for me Wikicampsmahjong and Camps 7. - no. 8 will be out in Feb 2015, sometimes places like NRMA or RACV sell the outgoing one cheaply,then you can update on line.

As Jules said, Camps 8 will be out in February 2015, from the Camps Australia Wide website FAQ's....

" We release a new edition of Camps Australia Wide every 2 years. Camps 7 was released in February 2013 so Camps 8 will be on sale mid February 2015"

Bear in mind that from the date of release you have 4 years of free updates (eg; free updates for Camps 7 expire in Feb 2017).

So if you have Camps 7 and are happy to update until then you won't have to buy a new edition until 2017 (Camps 9).

We use Wikicamps backed up with Camps 7 as well as a stack of online sites that may show some additional camp sites. Of course, don't forget the info to be gleaned from natters around the camp fire and at happy hours.

I have to agree that wikicamps is by far superior to camps 7, I made a comparison and found even camps 7 app was way out of date (and more expensive) where wikicamps is pretty much on the ball. smile

It's all been covered above.
We have Camps 7 from RACQ. $20 cheaper than other shops.
We bought the Camps 7 download for our Garmin GPS for $20.
That has been handy.
Look in the book to find the spot you want. Put the number in the GPS. Presto-- you're on your way.
Or just activate the Camps 7 program on the GPS and you get a list of nearby spots.
Wikicamps is excellent. But as said above, you have to sort the worthwhile comments from the not-so-helpfull.
Playing with all the above has given us some great spots.
