Well, well, well, thanks a lot, Gaz! I don't have a pic of 2LF so I'll add that to my scrapbook page. I vaguely remember it despite being 45 years ago. The first thing the boss said to me when I arrived was, "Don't get any bright ideas... you're the best of a very bad bunch (of applicants)." Then he put me in the production studio (a twin of the on-air studio) and told me to practice with the broadcast desk. I was having a lovely time in there unaware that I was being piped into the boss's office, so after a while he came into the studio and said., "Right, you'll be doing the afternoon shift." Eeeeeeek! When I finally did get on air, I froze with fright and couldn't say a damn word. But I loosened up after a while and from then on they couldn't shut me up. By the way, LF is short for Lambing Flats, which is what the town used be called. It's famous for its cherries ya know... but I managed to keep mine while I was there. :) Thanks again, Gaz. What a lovely surprise!
Great stuff Gary...with a voice and quick wit such as yours, you could have been the next Jack Davey...the Legendary Jack Davey died in October 1959 and I presume you commenced 'announcing' about 1968/69?...<24 years of age and now 70 =46 years ago= 1968>..so perhaps you were born a little late for the best of the 'Golden Years' of traditional Australian Radio......so many of us 'Baby Boomers' had unfulfilling careers, living to work rather than working to live, because of family commitments... so it must have been great to do what you obviously had/have a passion for.. and.......like Roy Rene you had a perfect head for Radio...lol....working as a DJ in 'The Cross' during the R&R years...bet you have a few more story's you can't tell on here!.....lol.....interesting, thanks.....Hoo Roo....

Yes, I remember Jack Davey, and the "feud" between him and Bob Dyer. Jack used to say bite off more than you can chew and chew like buggery. But all I ever managed was to bite off more than I could chew and choke. Jack was a Kiwi who came to Oz and hit the big time (like Brian Henderson did). He moved over to TV but it was Dyer who shone with Pick a Box. Jack was a mad gambler and died of cancer with hardly a bob to bless himself with. But he was a legend in the radio biz.
As to stories to tell... I remember my mother turfing me out of the house when I told her that I'd quit my job in the Public Service for a job as a DJ in Kings Cross. So I rented a small flat in Darlinghurst Road and was surprised to discover that all my neighbors were waitresses who worked late hours like I did. Waitresses? I was very naive in those days. As to my mother, she forgave me after I got my first job in radio and welcomed me back to the brood.
And careers? I never thought of my time in the media as a career. It was party time. Kinda like a pub crawl. That was my big mistake. One day the party was over. But it doesn't matter now. I have better things to do like travel Oz and find a few nuggets.
Beautiful Gary......How could you ever forget Jack Davey and Bob Dyer. I remember when I was knee high to a grasshopper, lying on a carpet strip in front of the radio listening to those guys. Memories that come back as we get older.....
