sprinter insurance

Hi Folks...

are there any Mercedes Sprinter owners out there who can offer suggestions as to which insurance company might offer the best rates for comprehensive?

I'm trying to sort the morass of information...all clouded with various options and inclusions/non-inclusions... etc.

To be honest, I'm not enjoying the process...

I'm getting quotes around $800 to $900 per annum with low excess...

and $500 approx per annum with excess of $2000...is that reasonable?

Some insurers won't even insure a Sprinter...RAA included...not sure why...

I'm not a member of the Campervan and Motorhome Association just yet.

Shop around. Go with a broker if necessary. I/we are with CIL. It all depends on the agreed/market value and cover of insurance. I think ours is around $1100 PA. (2010 Sprinter 516 MH value $135k. Hope this helps.

There are a number of Insurers. One to consider is Ken Tame & Associates but you have to be a member of CMCA. Worth consideration. Others are MHIA; CIL; Apia; NRMA, and probably a few others that other Forum Members will suggest or recommend. . One point to look out for is Excess. The lower the excess the better although this makes the premium higher. The reason I say this, is because cracked windscreens are your most likely claim. I was with Apia. Low premium but fixed not negotiable excess of $500.00. Now if you need to replace a windscreen, and in my Iveco the cost is almost $700.00, you pay $500.00, Apia pay $200.00. Not a good deal. I am now with CIL. One free windscreen a year, second one within same year, excess $200.00. Premium at CIL is $100.00 per annum more than Apia, but I'll pick that up if I break a windscreen. Some Insurers, Apia and CIL come to mind, allow you to pay monthly with no extra charge.

Many other points to look at. Towing, how many kilometers free; will the Insurer transport your vehicle from anywhere in Australia to your home if seriously damaged; will the Insurer pay for your trip home after an accident, leaving your vehicle at a Repair shop; will the Insurer pay for accommodation away from home in the event of an accident. You just have to go thru the fine print and make comparisons.

Why some Insurers will not insure your Sprinter is because it maybe too old or maybe you are approaching Insurers that just don't specialize in MHs and caravans.

You should get a few responses to your question, study them all carefully.

I note this is your 14th. post. Welcome to our Forum.

Hi folks...and thanks for the help....I'm glad you guys are online fairly frequently...it's good to feel a part of a friendly group of travellers.
We travel wherever and whenever we can....I'm able to go away almost anytime, but Mina is a nurse, and working full-time...so she is limited to 6 weeks a year.

As for insurance...I was kind of avoiding "motorhome" insurance, bc it really only has a pretty basic fitout...no gas or electric stove...no shower, toilet etc...
and it's value is not really that high...I paid $25,000....which I thought was quite reasonable since it has only done 65,000 ks...so it's not like a $150,000 luxury home on wheels or anything.
But it's got house aircon...microwave, 80L water tank and sink, Engel fridge, queen size bed, 240 and 12V systems...swivel seating...very comfortable, but not what I would actually call a motorhome...more a camper really...I was considering purchasing a gas / elctric stove top, which I can obtain at a good price.
Anyway...the quote I was getting serious about only covers it for $18,000....
These insurers are all so different in their approach...it really is a minefield, and I hate trying to interpret all the fine print...just haven't got the patience for it.
But thanks Ken for the names...I'll contact them and query them.

Dinner time...gotta go.

I'm with RACV, and I have road side assist with them, I find they are good, they towed me from 60ks out of Norseman to Norseman WA  and on to Perth when the Ist mech could'nt fix her., no charge, I'm guessing when your broken down in the middle of nowhere, you need good insurance., I'm happy with what they did. I highly recommend RACV

We too are with Ken Tame, because we got several recommendations from users. CMCA membership is about $60/yr (which includes a monthly magazine).
We were attracted by their hassle-free reputation, BUT we haven't tested it yet! They do cover sprinters.

Hi Franjipani...

I wonder why RACV will insure a Sprinter, but RAA won't ?

Strange ??

I wonder if RACV will insure a Sprinter garaged in SA?...might give them a call.

thankyou Franjipani.
